As some of you may know I also have electronics as a hobby, recently I was messing with power regulators and I came up with this design capable of driving up to 3A loads in a range of 1 to MAX Volts...
Any doubts, you can ask me and I'll be glad to help!
Observations:
Q2 MUST be mounted in a heat sink,
The 10K resistor at the output is optional, but I found it improves the stability of the circuit a bit...
All resistors (except R2) should be 1% tolerance...
C1 is optional...
The input must be as stable as possible, usually a very large capacitor can/will do the trick...
Vref can be generated by a pot (I recommend a 10-turn 50k) configured as a voltage divider using the input rail. In that case the optional stage is not needed... (Vref should be VERY stable, usually a standard fixed voltage regulator (such as the 7805, 7812) is enough)...

It is free java applet I found on the net here is the link: http://www.falstad.com/circuit/
It is also a simulator but it sucks at it... For such purpose I recommend LTspice.
For generating board layouts and such I use Eagle Layout Editor. It has a free license as well as a paid one, the difference is the size of the board you can create I think...
Enjoy!
