It was several fractions before they ended their embrace, and Varan wiped away a tear. “It is so good to see you again, Vesan.”
Vesan smiled among her own tears. “And you, Varan. I want to apologize.”
“For what?”
“For forgetting you at first, after the treatment I underwent.”
Varan hugged her lover again. “But eventually you did remember, and I am glad of that.” She took Vesan’s left hand in her right and lifted it slightly, looking at it. “The surgeons did a remarkable job.”
“Yes, they did.” Vesan leaned in and nuzzled Varan again. “I also apologize for taking you from your duties. You have a staff meeting?”
Varan gave a soft chuckle. “Yes. I’m surprised the Command-Second hasn’t called.”
“That was my fault,” Vesan said. “I asked him to delay the staff meeting for a cycle.” She gave an almost girlish smile. “I wanted to surprise you.”
Varan found herself grinning. “You certainly did, beloved. Ernh, I – “
“Yes?”
“There is a chapel,” Varan said, “aboard the station. I . . . prayed for you, as you underwent your procedure.”
Vesan hugged her. “Thank you,” she said softly. “That was very thoughtful, Varan.”
Varan smiled, and studied the hand in hers again. “And I look forward to seeing what your new limb can do.”
“Aka? An investigation?” Vesan asked.
“Ulnt,” Varan said seriously. “It will be a very thorough study. In depth.”
The fingers of Vesan’s left hand curled around Varan’s hand. “I anticipate a wealth of data from the study.”
The two paused before both burst out laughing.
Vesan drew her subordinate close and nuzzled her. “You need to attend your meeting. If I know Admiral k’Jan, she will not delay the exercise.”
Varan gestured comprehension and stepped back. She straightened her uniform and asked, “Do I look presentable, Admiral?”
“Very, Captain,” Vesan replied. “Shall we begin our investigation after dinner, when you are off duty?”
“Of course.” Varan grinned. “We must begin collecting data soon.”
The two viri parted ways after stepping out of Varan’s quarters, with Vesan headed for the station access lock and Varan walking forward to the cruiser’s command section.
“Captain in Command,” the Command-Second said as Varan entered the compartment. The various stations were staffed, with the various officers attended by engineers as the ship’s functions were calibrated. The kam vacated the captain’s chair as Varan stepped forward. “How was your leave, Captain?”
“Very relaxing, Subcaptain,” Varan replied.
