Lu's chomer mask protects her face from tree branches and shrapnel when she is exploring the woods or working with machines. The knobs on the sides can be twisted to adjust airflow. This feature protects Lu's mouth and lungs from small particles (wood dust and plastic flakes usually) and toxic air (a byproduct of the machines she works on).
The mask is also infused with chomer magic. Chomers can hold their breath a long time / filter the air they breath by manipulating their throat and nose muscles. They are also naturally inclined to craft things! That's one of the many reasons why Lu relates to them.
