2021, mixed media on illustration board. Part of my Corrupted Cartoons series.
My artist’s statement for the series:
This work explores the uneasy relationship between reality and the escapism of mass media. The central characters are from cartoons I watched and loved as a child in the 1980s and 1990s. I play upon the stories of the original media, but I twist them into scenes of horror inspired by historical artists like Francisco Goya and Francis Bacon. With a combination of hand-drawn media and collage, I contrast graphical elements with naturalistic and expressionistic environments to build images of universes colliding. I use newspaper and magazine clippings both as a foundation to build on and as an anchor tying the pieces to real social issues.
Each piece is a window into a satirical nightmare, where sinister elements have entered and corrupted the cartoon world. The consequence is an excess of violence. Simultaneously absurd and caustic, these scenes expose the cruelty inherent in the simplified morality of children’s media, where the protagonists always win regardless of their tactics. When brutality becomes endemic, “good guys” and “bad guys” are no longer easily distinguishable. My pieces invite the viewer to question their own sense of justice and who deserves to suffer.
