Swift is an adventurer by trade. Living initially on one the boarder towns of Equestria and trained to fight monsters and invaders and perform the occasional trek into the wilderness on some expidition or another. He's still fairly young and had only been on a few adventures, but he's skilled with both a sword and a bow, using them with his mouth or in levitation fields. He doesn't need arrows as his main skill is conjuring magical arrows of different elemental properties to shoot.

He always wanted to be a royal guard for one of the princesses, but Celestia's ranks were constantly overflowing with applications and when Luna returned her Night Guard required special transformative magic. Cadance was far too far north and her guards were believed to be all Crystal Ponies (Swift didn't know about certain exceptions). It was when he heard about the newly ascended Princess Twilight though he realized that was his chance and packed his bags for Ponyville to become her first royal guard.

Unfortunately Twilight was reluctant to accept at first, but relented provided he not get in the way, treat her as more of an equal and a friend, and, to his surprise, act as a research assistant in her magical studies and experiments (IE, guinea pig for magical experiments). It's not a job he envisioned, but it's still fun and interesting regardless.

Swift gets along well with most of Twilight's friends, though he does tend to roll his eyes at Pinkie's high energy and Rarity's obsessions on fashion. And he has butted heads with Rainbow Dash and Applejack on occasion, but more out of stubbornness than any real personal issue. Ironically the only one he has trouble being around is Fluttershy for her wishy-washy inability to take a stand on most things. She's gotten better, but when they first met he found her 'if that's ok with you' lack of a spine to be quite frustrating, but as she's gotten more confident they get along better (so long as Angel Bunny isn't around).
