Wow I tried plugging it into Google Translate and nothing came up. Google Lens wouldn't detect it I guess because of the background. Where did you find this?

Windy asked me to translate this originally, but this writing probably predates modern hirigana so I wasn't able to. So posted this to hopefully get some more eyes on this who have better knowledge of Japanese writing.

My (educated) guess that this was calligraphy was confirmed by my friend, who also has difficulty with it.

My genuine suggestion is to find a native and ask them. :/ I'm sorry

I'll have to see if I can get in touch again with some contacts from way back.

I can only make some guesses to the top one and maybe the bottom one, but caligraphy is so different i'd probably be wrong anyways.

The only thing I can advise is the middle character is Hiragana, "O"

Now that you mention it I can see the resemblance somewhat, so now that I'm looking at this again, I'm thinking the bottom one might be "Mi" and the first one might be ""Ru" so "Ru O Mi" or "Mi O Ru"? (Though I don't think it would be read from bottom to top?)

Still think it would be best to find a native to translate, in case I'm just guessing entirely wrong.

The bottom is absolutely Kanji, but I can't tell for the top. I'd second getting a native to look at it.
