Despite all their super-technic advances, they are still very tradition-bound, both in religious/superstitious adherences and various social/cultural aspects that have not changed much in several thousand years. They are still very aware of that long history and tradition behind everything they do.
There are still pilgramages to various important sites and it was well in to their early industrial period that potentially dangerous entry into manhood ordeals were still expected.

Short form answer, Fehnniks are ever so cute little guys who are also fierce warriors. Though they are very technically advanced, starfaring and all that, their politics are still rather feudal, and when an enemy threatens, it is the various noble houses who muster forces to serve the Empire. In the main current story, the Scion of House Zod gets himself stupidly injured and unfit to lead the House's forces. But it would be a critical political disaster for the House to not have a blood member of the House in that position, so the twin Sister of the Scion intends to masquerade in his place. The obvious perils and complications are compounded by the social and cultural taboos against females (especially ones of status) being out of the Home, in the military, in command of males, and going off planet.
