im not really an artist but the most common suggestion ive seen is: references references and references.
my own suggestion would be to use a different basic shape for MLP style equines, they use circle or a sphere for the head shape rather than the rectangle you used here.
you could try to go half way and draw draconic equines, or kirins, or quillins and see if that helps
