Original Species: Crested Runvern
The Crested Runvern is a medium-sized, herbivorous wyvern native to the open grasslands of Shangrila. While a vast majority of the thus far discussed herbivorous wyverns invested in size to protect themselves from predators, this species opted to choose speed over brawn. When threatened, this creature opts to run first and ask questions later. In short, it is rather skittish.
However, researchers noted that the Crested Runvern is also a curious creature. If confronted by a humanoid creature and not startled, this wyvern will approach it to investigate. While it always stays just out of arms reach, the wyvern will typically circle researchers and observe them before going back to grazing. The most likely explanation is that the Runnervern does not recognize the humanoid form as a predatory feature.
It is important to note that people should refrain from antagonizing the Runnervern as it's still a wyvern; despite being skittish, it can still be dangerous. During conflicts for dominance between members of this species, researchers noted a substantial usage of pecks, kicks, and tail lashes. These intraspecific confrontations often left the losing participant with debilitating wounds. It is not too farfetched to assume, that a cornered Runnervern could and would kill a humanoid creature if cornered or aggravated enough.
Researchers were unable to confirm whether the Runnervern possesses a breath-weapon.
Runneverns use their crests and throat sacks to communicate. Both males and females have them, although those belonging to the latter aren't as colorful (usually yellow and green, instead of red). Runnerverns communicate via a mix of the raising and lowering of their head-crests and expanding their throat sacks.
Their diet consists primarily of herbs, grass seeds and the occasional fallen fruit or nut.
