Spring, 1331
Brughel and Logan came upon the walls of Caldern Castle, leading a large wagon covered with cloth and led by a dozen oxen. Before them loomed the powerful Gunnison Gate barbican, controlling a drawbridge over a moat, with four towers staggered by height, a portcullis rivaling that in Alba Castle, and a pair of massive oak doors 60 feet tall. A dozen soldiers stood at the ready, with a captain wearily checking each visitor for their passes.
“Halt! Who goes there? Do you have your pass from the city gate?” The commander called out at the pair.
The artist boisterously slapped his companion on the back.
“Tell King Owin that Brughel the Painter has come with the hero Colonel Durham to provide a new hope to Nalbin and turn our military fortunes around! For I have created a work that would enable the Auxian Kingdom to defeat the Tassurian scum!”
The captain cast a wary eye on the sharply dressed figure, and the tattered, wounded soldier beside him, obviously a veteran, leaning upon a staff. “Oh?”
“Everyone knows about the demonic terrors that the Other Men have brought upon us in this war. Families worry about the night. Children hide in fear. Even soldiers quake at the sounds of dragons approaching. But we can encourage our people! We can hearten and re-energize them! I have made a statue depicting Colonel Durham here, the Hero of Mill’s Crossroads and Gryphon’s Pass in battle, defeating a dragon in battle, and I aim to have it inspire our people to fight for victory!”
The captain whistled aloud, taking a second look at the Commander of the Stanton Militia. “You’re the commander of the Dragon Brigade?”
“I am.”
“Seven dragons. That was an impressive feat, colonel, and you have my esteem.”
That seemed to greatly excite both the guard detail as well as the crowd gathered behind the pair.
“He killed seven dragons at Mill’s Crossroads! Seven!”
“He was wounded holding off the dragons at the Gryphon’s Gate!”
The sentries managing the crowd struggled to maintain their own discipline in the face of meeting a hero of the war, half-heartedly pushing back the crowd and occasionally casting awkward glances at the warrior.
As the commotion went on, the captain turned to Logan. “I appreciate your coming here, Commander Durham. King Owin would likely be interested in an audience with you. We need your help in learning how to kill those sky demons.”
Logan bowed “I’d be honored to hold an audience with the king. However I would be interested in bringing my friend along as well.”
The captain frowned as he turned back to the dapper bearded figure wearing a ludicrous hat and bearing a more ludicrous smile upon his face, then at the large cloth-covered wagon.
“Can he be trusted?” The commander of the guard finally asked the colonel.
Brughel seemed besides himself at the insinuation. “I’m a native of Caldern, and my shop has been in the shadow of Caldern Castle for twenty years! I am loyal to my liege! I would not have created this if I was not!”
“I can vouch for him.” Logan quickly replied. “I have met Brughel in the course of my travels. He is a dependable man, and as loyal an Auxian as they come.”
The other guard looked at the painter suspiciously. “Then why hasn’t he joined the ranks?”
Brughel coughed into his hand. “An old wound sustained during the Caldern Garum Riots prevented me from taking up the spear in defense of our kingdom. But luckily my talents lie elsewhere.”
The captain continued shaking his head. “Even then, King Owin will refuse. As would I. This seems like a waste of time-I can’t see how a statue could change our fortunes.”
“It’s quite impressive work, soldier-one of my best!” Brughel interjected.
The captain already began waving him away. “You may be welcomed as a companion of Commander Durham, but do not waste the realm’s time with foolish and pointless displays.”
“I assure you that this piece will change Auxia-”
“Begone. For surely you are a madman.”
“Oh? And let our king ignore this?”
Brughel suddenly went over and unveiled his creation, revealing a gigantic, life-sized marble statue of Colonel Durham locked in battle with a dragon. The wyrm was rearing up, about to immolate Logan in a ball of fire, but the warrior had taken the opportunity to thrust his awlpike into the dragon’s throat. Muscles tensed, sweat trickled, blades shone, fires and smoke danced in the air- it was like a real duel, only frozen in stone.
“Holy shit.” One of the other guards uttered, looking at the statue of Logan, then at the more battered-looking Logan himself, trying to distinguish between them.
The captain also stared in awe. After a long pause, he bowed politely. “My apologies. You do make some impressive work, Artist Brugal. Very well, I’ll let Castellian Merritt know of your presence and requests.”
The artist seemed satisfied by the newly gained respect. “The name is Brughel. B-r-u-g-h-e-l. Don’t wear it out.”

"It is through the deeds the immortality earned and through the feat conquered the remembrance
Life is not about to live long enough to witness end but to live in such ways your name will be spoken with awe and respect
And thus your long shadow will embrace your legacy and make it a part of past that will be told in legends of a brave warriors and kind folks. Your grave will not be spat upon, but will be a shrine to many people that seek guidance and light in the darkest times."
Very cool and gorgeous piece of art
Definitely Tito always has great ability to represent scenes and whole plot
They always look so alive and rich like they were pulled out of real world
And this art doesn't disappoint as well
Absolutely wonderful

Kind of beautiful, and as usual, on my favourite, and quite in places sad and painful in some moments theme. What can you do, Europe, dragon fighters are mostly honoured in it, except of course for exceptions like Wales (Celts in general are mostly friends with them for some reason, it is proved), Slovenia, where the dragon became a protector and friend of the inhabitants of the capital of the country and not only, despite the fact that one city in Slovenia honours the white horse of St. George.
Ah, also surprisingly, Iceland.
And in general, and who to our bronze handsome to put any memory at least in the form of what?
