It was supposed to give a better understanding of sentence structure. However, it never caught on anywhere but the US and by the mid-20th century the evidence was clear: For most students it was effectively worthless and a waste of time.
Even the later tree diagrams that replaced the Reed-Kellogg diagrams used in the comic are really only useful for analysis by linguists and not teaching language in the first place.
