For one of two main characters I've been developing. He's the forager, and spending all that time traveling out in the Texas sun and heat, he needs eye protection.

The first time I went to the Smithsonian I saw a display case of eye protection through the ages and around the world. Therewas a piece of carved whale bone from the Inuits that had a sdlit over each eye to protect from the sun on the snow. It's an image that always stuck with me, they were surprisingly attractive.
The small slits-for-eyes are recommended in the SAS survival handbook as eyewear against snowglare and bright sun. Something people probably don't think about is how bad that is for your eyes if you are out stranded somewhere. Especially with snow glare. I did some winter camping survival practice and my buddy who is a city dude didn't even think about needing sunglasses out there. Lots of snow. I'm like duuuude you want some sunglasses for that. You can make the slit kind out of something like birch bark or whatever you've got, if you really need some. Very hard to see out of though, the cardboard ones were. Certainly were better than nothing, though.
In the mess of dreams I am still having, I just had one where I was wearing one of the bone versions of the slit sunglasses, due to your mentioning the whale bone ones. These were probably deer bone if anything since that is the kind of bone that is most common here. The eye holes on it were more like those in a half-mask than those that ate slitted, but no doubt this is where the dream came from.
