Pony Tarot Nouveau (As/Joker)
The ultimate aim of my Pony Tarot Nouveau project was to actually print the deck in real life and play card games with it, for which I had found a prospective print shop on advice of a fellow Singaporean brony. After researching actual tarot card sizes I decided on 60×112.5mm for my deck, for which 14 can fit on an A3 sheet – hence 78 cards on six sheets – but that leaves six empty spaces. Extra cards in Tarot Nouveau decks typically contain French Tarot cheat sheets, advertising or other textual information, all of which I deemed unnecessary since (1) the complete rules of French Tarot can easily be found online and (2) other tarot games exist, including Danish Tarok/Grosstarock which nowadays uses imported Tarot Nouveau decks.
Seeing that my deck uses typical French suits, I instead filled the empty slots with "high aces" and a red and black joker, thus making the deck usable for almost every card game ever conceived – bridge, poker, Rommé, dou dizhu, etc. The high aces are for games where the ace is or may be high and feature the Equal Four arranged in a particularly pleasing way:
* Minor suits are male, major suits female
* Red suits face right, black suits left
* Rounded suits have curly hair (and horns), pointed suits straight hair (and no horns)
The jokers' corner indices were deliberately designed to be unambiguously distinct from each other and the star of the tarot fool, even in monochrome. They reference the bridge ranking of the suits of their colours, black lowest and highest and red in between. Naturally they would have to depict related characters too, and the only such pair I could think of was Gallus and Silverstream.
