I usually only complete one or two doodles of varying levels of effort.
My usual approach is to find a cool character I'd like to draw and doodle it, and, if someone attacks me, I look at their characters to see if any tickle my brain.
I wish you luck, but don't feel too much pressure from it. Just a cool art game to be involved in :)

I'd say the only way to not do artfight "right" would be to steal/copy art for references, and to start drawing before the month begins. There's also some site-rules (mostly keep things SFW and no kink art with minors involved), but the event isn't limited to just the site.
