Monosodium glutamate moment
A glitch hoppy-ish chiptune EDM track. Made in FamiTracker.
This started out as an experiment with the Namco 163 wavetable synthesis audio expansion chip used in Famicom games like Final Lap and Megami Tensei II. It is a very peculiar sound chip, granting you 1-8 additional sound channels and letting you design your own waveforms. I mostly went with sawtooth waves and some noisy overtone stuff here. But the more channels you enable on the chip, the crunchier its output gets (plus there's that weird high frequency noise).
Certain emulators and NSF players can clean up the expansion's sound rendering but I kind of like the roughness of it as is. The NES/Famicom isn't exactly a hi-fi device after all. Most games with a N163 chip utilized 4 channels which is what I also started with, but I eventually updated that to 6 channels.
The chord progression and general vibe of what I was composing was giving me "an evening at the arcade or mall, after-work activities" feel, so I was thinking of going with something like that as the title. I was trying to think of an alliterative title with two E's and at some point my brain suggested "Evening on e621" and well, I felt it was strangely appropriate.
