Why is it thrown out? Light and color both still apply, unless your character is in a pitch black room with no light source. Then just fill the canvas with black =P.
If you want a shiny latex character, use the same techniques but use a soft round brush, not a hard brush. It'll come out airbrushed, but will still have that shiny look to it.
