I originally sketched this up a lil while ago. Was trying to go for a more organic looking artificial life form. Quite happy with the way Ter here turned out.
"Unit 01. Report to chamber one." Came a voice over the installation's com system.
Ter looked up at the ceiling and began to make his way there. He was the first of his kind. A Synthetic Lifeform that was so like Organics in all the best ways that sensors had difficulty discerning if they were synthetic or organic. Ter was the first and he was beginning to comprehend the nature of his existence. He had so far been given a wide range of test both mental and physical. Ter had named himself in one of them. He chose the term Terabyte as his name. Ter for short. He had shown his physical strength and tactical skills in other test. His times on many obstetrical courses put the ones set by humans to shame.
Now he was about to begin testing for something else. Ter entered Chamber one. His optics seeing perfectly in the dark of the room as the doors sealed shut behind him. He immediately assessed the situation. In one corner he saw what appeared to be a small human child. To the other side of the room he saw 3 synthetics emerge from alcoves in the wall. He immediately noted they were guard dog models. He also noted they bore the facility insignia. They were advancing on the human. Ter stood there confused. He looked up at the ceiling. Test parameters were always laid out before a test. But now there was nothing. Ter looked at the other machines. He could already tell they were going to attack the human. But he'd been told not to damage installation property unless instructed otherwise. Ter processed this information and finally reached a decision on what to do. he ran forward and leaned into the air placing himself between the human child. One of the dogs jumped at them. Ter grabbed it mid air by the neck and expertly punched through the dog's chest and pulled out its power unit. He hurled the dog at one of the other dogs knocking it down as the third managed to bite into Ter's leg spilling white nano liquid. Ter quickly dislodged his leg and with a single fluid motion brought it down on the dog's head with a crunch as it's metallic skull gave way and it was destroyed. The second dog was now getting back to it's feet as Ter's wound had now sealed itself. Before the dog could make a move Ter leaped over to it, took hold of it's head and jerked in on one direction disabling it. Standing back Ter gave the fallen Guard Dogs a look over and walked over to the human child kneeling down to it's level.
"You are safe now. I have disabled the Guard Dog units." Ter told him as the lights in the room now came on.
"Wonderful." The child smiled as he stood up now standing at stomach height to Ter. "Congratulations Ter. It looks like you've passed your last test."
"I do not understand." Ter stated tilting his head to the side.
"My name's Adam Welcon. That help a little?" The child asked him.
"Adam Welcon. He is listed as the human that built me. And as the Lead for the Installation." Ter said still confused. "His age is listed as 27. I judge your age to be approximately 11.6 years of age."
"Right on all counts. What's not in your copy of the file is the fact I'm a victim of Regression Syndrome. Happens now and again among organics. Anyway I'd imagine your wondering what the purpose of this test was." Adam said crossing his arms and smiling.
"Based on the test itself I assume it was a test of my reactions." Ter stated simply.
"To a degree. We were pretty sure your model line would lead to sentience. We were right. I wanted to see how you reacted to a situation that you weren't prepared for. See what kind of choice you'd make on your own. Standard models without human law safe guards hardwired would obey the instructions they already had on file. So they would have stood there and done nothing as the dogs advance on a human as they were instructed not to damage Installation property. You chose to disregard that instruction to protect human life. Congratulations again. You proved not only are you sentient but moral as well." Adam told Ter
Well hope you guys liked the pic and the story. ^^ Had a lot of fun writing this lil story.

It's quite logical: broken robots, even sentient ones, can be repaired. A disabled sentient AI is not permanently harmed as long as its non-volatile memory remains intact. Broken humans are much more difficult to repair, and permanent damage is almost inevitable for all but the most superficial of injuries. Hence it's not just moral, it's rational to preserve organic life from injury at the cost of injury to mechanical life. =^_^=
