Gyako did not expect his one-night stay at the inn would come with a free dinner, not that he was complaining. It would have been hard to find food since he had no more money. He helped Erilia down the stairs to a place that seemed like a kitchen. The innkeeper was there cutting two loaves of bread for them. It smelled delicious.
“There you are, have a seat,” she said pointing at some empty wooden chairs beside the table.
“This is mighty generous of you ma’am,” Gyako said. “This wouldn’t cost me extra right?”
“Heavens no! You all seemed really tired and could use some nice food.”
Gyako had never expected this much hospitality when coming to this town. It felt like home for him. The bread was very fluffy and buttery. This woman knew how to make some good bread. Erilia also began stuffing her face, so much so that Gyako had to tell her to stop before she choked. The innkeeper laughed at this odd duo and asked Gyako some questions he was not ready for.
“By the way, where are you going?”
“Ummmm I’m not sure,” Gyako paused, “I was hoping to find some sort of adventurer’s guild in this town but I’m not sure where to look.”
“Oh you’re an adventurer?” the cat’s eyes widened.
“Well, somewhat.”
“You’re in luck, we have one in this town. Just a few blocks over. Kinda biggish wooden structure. “Treasures and Adventures”, my boys wanted to join that before they became guards.”
“That’s amazing, thank you I’ll go over there tomorrow.”
Suddenly there was a loud Boom from the heavens. It made Erilia jump out of her seat and hide under the table.
“Oh Erilia, are you all right?” Gyako asked all concerned.
“It’s scawy!!!” she squealed.
“Aw it’s gonna be ok.”
“So what are you gonna do with her?” the woman asked him.
“What do you mean?” Gyako responded confused at her sudden question.
“I can tell that she’s not your child and I’m not sure they are gonna allow you to bring her on whatever missions they have because she’s so young. Do you have a place for her to go?”
Gyako looked at Erilia. It all came to his realization that he had no idea how to take care of a child, alone without any real money and a place to stay.
“Oh Flambile you’re right,” Gyako exclaimed, “I don’t know what I’m doing. Everything’s been happening so fast I hadn’t got the time to process it all.”
Gyako managed to pull Erilia out from under the table. She hugged him tight. He could feel her shivering with fear.
“I can always look after her for you,” the woman suggested, “It’s been a bit lonely around here so I wouldn’t mind”
“NO!!!” Erilia screamed out, “I want to stay with brother!!!”
“But Erilia I’m not your brother,” Gyako said trying to calm her down.
“Yes you are!!! Yes you are!!! Please don’t leave me!!!”
BOOOOOOM!
“Eeeeeeppp!!!”
Tears started to well up in her eyes. Gyako didn’t know how to move forward from this. Luckily for him, the old cat bailed him out.
“We’ll decide what to do in the morning. You two should go get some sleep.”
Unfortunately, sleep was the one thing that Gyako and Erilia will not be getting much of that night. The storm hit the town really hard and the wind howled like old sirens. Every crash of thunder was deafening to their sensitive ears. Every clap made Erilia jump and Gyako was having a hard time trying to keep her calm. What he did not know was how tomorrow was going to go, or whether it was the thunder or the chance that Erilia would be left alone again is which scared her more. What he did know is that he was going to have to make some hard decisions once morning came.
