Are you using a high temp or low temp glue gun? If you're using low, you might want to switch to high. It melts a helluva lot faster and you can glue quicker.

Not everyone's first sculptures are masterpieces. Just keep trying! Practice makes perfect! Back when I was trying to make my own, I went through 5 heads. :)

Well, making fursuits is definitely not a cheap hobby....that's the downside. But if you can find out what you're doing wrong, then you can improve upon it! :)

That's what, 1" low density foam? The low density stuff tends to be floppier than you want for a head. Also for heads I prefer to use half inch and work in layers, which adds stiffness. What problem have you been having with the glue? Is it not sticking, or is it staying liquid too long? If it just isn't drying you might just be using too much. A bunch of hot glue in one place can't lose heat fast. Letting the gun get very hot can contribute to this but there isn't much you can do about that. Maybe try using clothespins or something to clamp the pieces together while they dry too.

This foam seems not to be the right one. However. I have no clue about density of foam.

Craft stores usually color code: white low density, green high. If you're buying from an upholstery store ask the shopkeeper because they'll both be white. By my understanding green foam isn't the best material either but it's better than white while still being cheap. I did use 1" white for one early head and it had floppiness problems in the muzzle. Is that what you're having?

nope. my problem is, .. How to explain... If had to wrap another piece of foam around two stripes of foam to keep them together.

i first practiced on cardboard and dump materials,
so i didnt have problems when it goes wrong.

but it looks promising, get the glue a bit hotter and use sizzors / electric knofe to shape up a bit, it will definately look better.

also on my gallery there are some pictures of the foam mesh trick, like yours, take a look.
seconded that your foam is invissible when you fur it up, so dont worry how it looks, this looks good

That what I had in mind. I wanted to cut it into shape later but I doubt that would work... I think it will simply fall apart

i have had bad experience with white package foam blocks, they not good to glue.

you should try and ask a carpenter near you (yes they still are around) for some old pieces of foam

most carpenters give away there litter upholstery cos they dont have to pay transport.
i worked with upholstery, get the glue medium hot, not superhot, and it will do fine

Picking the right foam can be tricky. I prefer Charcoal packaging foam for my suits. Which you can buy online and it's reletively inexpensive and has a nice plushie feel to it but is sturdy enough to take some damage if neccessary.

You don't need much foam... I used a 10x10x5 block in my head. That site puts a 12x12x5 block at about $15

Hmmm... Well, I would imagine that there would be suppliers of charcoal grey packing foam in Germany, since it's mainly used to ship auto & machine parts. A little research might yield a local supplier in your area. Look at shipping stores or go to auto-parts stores and see if they have any surplus they'd be willing to part with. =3

I also recommend using a nylon balaclava (amazon search will yield balaclavas from $5 to $10) as your base. Sew elastic straps that wrap around the head from the chin to the top of the head, and another that goes above the eyes around the back of the head. You then mount your foam to these straps. This is useful for making articulated jaws as well. This method is a bit tricky to work with as you'll need another person around to use to fill the balaclava and give it shape to work with, but you could also go to craft stores and pick up styrofoam heads to use as a mount to work with. Which is what I did... The idea of putting hot glue on stuff while somebody is wearing the balaclava just seemed sadistic to me, but it was recommended in this book:

Which was highly useful in the construction of the 2 suits that I've made so far.

if all you want to do is practice, look for discarded couches on the curbside for foam (in the cushions) and any second hand stores will usually have plastic mesh, or latch hook mesh. and there is nothing wrong in using tape!

I will ripp the foam off and going to a shop where they repair couches. They are said to be cheap ^^

Versuch dir einfach zeit zu nehmen und nicht alles auf einmal zu wollen bei mir unter Scraps ist die bauweise die du auch schon angefangen hast.

Ich hab zwischen dem Gitterkopf und dem Schaumstoffaufkleben 2 Monate gewartet... :D Aber ich machs nochmal ab, ich hab jetzt raqusgefunden wie ichs machen werde ^^

Jo übung macht den Meister. wenn ich mit dem ersten fertig bin versuch ich mich an meinem 2. mit besserem Fell und naja diesmal auch das Ziel das ich den Luchs besser treffe.
