Character
Jules was born in 1890, near the French-German border. His parents were on the run from a group of religious fanatics hunting them down. With pain in their hearts, they reasoned that the only way to keep their son safe was to give him up, keeping him away from them and the dangerous people chasing after them. After all, he'd look like just another fox cub. They laid him at the doorstep of a farm with a sheep couple mourning about the death of their firstborn child, who had died from measles. They saw the sudden appearance of a child on their doorstep as a gift from God. They name him Jules, and treat him as fully part of the family. Neither Jules nor his foster parents knew about his kitsune background and thought he's just an ordinary fox.It became clear that Jules had a talent for magic. He could will the wind to blow in the way he wanted as a child, and seemed to have an affiliation with air magic. Of course he was curious what else he could do, and found some books in the library about magic. He had to train himself, because his family didn't have to means to pay for him to study at a university. But he thought maybe if he'd save up some money, he could get to university somewhere in the future. But then 1914 came around, and he was drafted into the army, and fought on the fields in France to keep Germany at bay. These years were traumatic for him, but this became even more worrying when in 1917 he grew his second tail. Not knowing what this meant, he panicked, but he had no time to find out more about it in the midst of the war. When the war ended, he was still alive, and finally got enough money to study, and it was there that he found out he was a kitsune.
Jules was a hard-working student, sometimes to the worry of his peers. He eventually graduated cum laude, and the university of Paris saw great potential in him, and offered him a position as a researcher. Jules seemed to be particularly interested in the brand new field of arcatech, where magic and technology come together. In the interbellum years, he was one of the postgraduate students helping the professor overseeing the study to find new ways to control and apply magic in machines. Things were looking bright for him, but his dreams were shattered yet again when Germany invaded France again 1939. This time, the German regime also wanted to eliminate powerful magic users, as they are seen as "heathens" and a potential threat. This means a kitsune like him wasn't safe. He had to run, and escaped to England, and from there he booked a a one-way boat trip to Canada, and ended up in Montréal. He was later recruited by Bell Labs, having heard of his achievements in Paris, and wanted him to continue his research there. However, Jules kept a long time grudge against Germany, a country that has ruined his hopes and dreams twice.
Jules was getting lonelier as the 1960s came around. His parents were long dead, along with most people and family he knew. He was keeping himself at a distance, not willing to begin a relationship because he was painfully aware he would probably outlive them by a long time. But in the late 1960s, something miraculous happened in his life. After all these years, his biological mother had found him. To his shock, his mother turned out to be German, and had also fled to America to escape the horrors of WW2. At the point he felt the lowest in his life, his mother was a godsend for him, and she revealed more secrets about the kitsune an their community to him, as well as the name she had given to him at birth, Gottfried. However, he never became fully part of the kitsune community, always feeling like an outsider. His upbringing had made him more humble than his kitsune peers, of whom most had a certain level of arrogance that they felt elevated above the "common folk" by their long lives and magic prowess.
Jules had all the time in the world to dedicate to his research, and to train his skills in magic. Having such a long life, he could master these skills with a tremendous amount of practice. Jules was involved in plenty of breakthroughs in the field of arcatech, and he was building a name for himself. Now a professor, and a beloved one at that, he was leading the research, getting the best out of his students who worked with him. Each decade the arcatech projects became more potent, and this attracted the attention of some malicious parties. By the end of the 2020s, the progress he had made had so much potential, that the Kitsune Kult, followers of several corrupt kitsunes who propped themselves up as prophetic leaders, saw him as a major threat. One of their groups planted a bomb in his laboratory, hoping to take him out with it. The bomb went off, but it failed to kill him; he did lose his most of his left arm and leg, and one of his tails, but still managed to hold off a dozen of cultists attacking him right after he was struck. He contacted an old kitsune friend Dust immediately, knowing she had a short line to DMT, as he was requiring serious medical attention. They could fix up his arm and leg with prosthetics, but the lost tail was permanent, or at least until he would grow a new one in thirty to fourty years. Sincethen, he was putting his efforts trying to stop these cultists and their nefarious plans in a shadow war, one that eventually culminated into the Wellspring War. The third war he would be involved in...
After the war, Jules was considered to be a war hero. He was one of the few kitsune to show himself in public as being one. He was employed by the Terran Fleet to develop arcatech for their new fleet of spaceships that were in development, but found himself soon in a command role. Eventually, in 2047, he was assigned to the very first Terran-built battleship, to replace the Yorktown as Earth's guardian. He had the honour to give the ship its name, and so he became the captain of the U.F.S. Renaissance. The ship would become a platform to test the latest arcatech developments, some of which Jules certainly had a hand in. Not much later, he would develop a way to convert electricity into magic energy. This was a galactic novelty, and his name became known across the whole Alliance.

Alright there. Here is the starter:
1. You've mentioned the "UN Space Force." Are you implying that the UN is now a legitimate planetary government capable of issuing currency, collecting taxes and handeling diplomatic affairs along with maintaining its own constitution?
2. I've seen hints that the Federation had probaly sent agents onto earth earlier before the series. Did they actually do this despite the Prime Directive? (I don't see any mention of it being called anything else)
Those are the two main questions I have at the moment.

Those are the two main questions I have at the moment.
1. The UN stepped in the power vacuum after the Wellspring War culminated in an almost extinction level event, leaving many of the great powers in the world severely damaged, or even completely destroyed. The UN took its responsibility to lead the relief efforts to get at least some order back into the world, legitimising its position. After First Contact was made, the UN was the main government body of planet Earth. However, the UN wasn't the sole government body, and made sure government layers below it, such as continental unions and countries, were put in place to take care of more local issues. Technologies such as food synthesisers make scarcity of most items a thing of the past, leaving currency as a luxury item one could live without (one which caused great economic upheaval). Since the UN took charge and Earth found out they're not alone in the universe anymore, no more wars were fought on Earth. The post-scarcity era made that seem pointless.
2. There has been alien influence on Earth for thousands of years, not just by the Federation in modern times, but also the Atlantians and the Vidari in antiquity. They were the cause of so many different forms and anthro species being a thing on Earth. The process was chaotic, and it nearly broke the early Federation. The meddling Earth was one of the main reasons a Prime Directive-like rule was created within the Federation in the first place. The other being the disastrous handling of the Khyrian by the Precursors, driving them off a planet they had settled upon after having lost their homeworld so long ago. Driving away the Khyrians turned them into the space pirates we know today. Still they kept a close eye on Earth, as with its powerful source of magic, it was a too powerful potential ally they couldn't afford to lose... or been turned against them...

1. OK, that answers that question. If only the real UN could actually do their duties like in this story. Still, that seems a little to easy for my taste. (This is just an opinion by the way). The idea of simply synthesiting food out of the bat is not abysmal, bu crazy. With that, millions to billions of people would be put out of work. If you ever played fallout or well, heard of it (doesn't sound like something of your taste), well, you'll know what I'm talking about. Also, your saying that things such as computers, clothes and even houses are given for free in this universe. Scarcity, or more specifically, necessity is something that's needed. Its what causes advancement of civilization in the first place. Making the world so easy in an instant puts thousands of billions of years of technological advancement to waste. If you've ever read brave new world, you'll know people don't want to just sit around and do nothing. People want to work. Why else do you think we are smart and can do things other species can't? OK, I feel like I'm now exercising my views on some matters, onto the second question.
2. Isn't it night time for you? I was not expecting you to reply this early on. Either ways, I have more questions, or things that I want to ask about, but I need to come up with the right words.

1. You're thinking in the trappings of captialist realism, that capitalism is the only way a society can function. However, in this story universe, the main prerequisites have made capitalism to stop making sense, and the transition was brutal. In fact, the whole Wellspring War was initiated by good intentions: Jules, the very same character as here on the character sheet, found a way to mass-recycle plastics with magitech in a way that was scaleable to industrial scale, which would dramatically lower the demand for oil, and thus lowering emissions. Well, you can guess what happened next: every country that was economically dependent on oil producing, basically plummeted into chaos. It was the first step of a growing worldwide conflict. After First Contact, capitalism stopped making even less sense, and with the way magitech was headed, it was only accelerating the inevitable: a world where you can create any material from any other material. If you have access to alien technology thousands of years ahead of yours that can transform any matter into almost any other matter (there are still limits, though), where even waste has its use in transforming it into something useful, and also having basically the entire universe to collect resources, what does scarcity even mean by then? Instead of having people's livelihoods determined by mind-numbing nonsense jobs just to make ends meet, just imagine what they could do if they don't have to worry about surviving on a meager wage. They will find new things to do. I mean, why do we work on hobbies that don't even pay us, or even cost us money? Because we want to do that. But this transition has been something the rich were ill prepared for, and it took a few years for the Earth to adjust to this new reality. Pretty much every civilisation in this galaxy went through this, and handled it differently. Some did go stagnant after a while (the Raelon, for instance) because they stopped taking risks. It's mostly the "younger" civilisations that make the most of the progress.
Also, just because scarcity is gone, doesn't mean luxury doesn't exist. Some things can't be synthesised by these machines, and there's still a "luxury" currency that exists to trade these items. This is one of the reasons why the Pioneer still has cooks, because you can replicate the ingredients, but you can't replicate the way a dish is prepared just like that. It's also a world where science and art thrives because there are no restrictions regarding budget, only time. And even though spacefaring civilisations have been around for thousands of years, there are still many, many planets left unexplored because there is just too many of them. Even Earth is basically in a backwater island of space-faring civilisations in a galaxy of "islands" of advanced civilisations, with the great unknown in between.
2. No, it's actually only 20:00 here when I'm writing this reply, with the sun still up in the sky for another two hours.

Yes and no. I don't belive capitalism is the only way that civilization can exist. I find myself more on the eco-capitalist semi socialist side of the spectrum. Work won't go away. People want to work. Otherwise the point of sentience becomes meaningless. The idea of synthesizing materials into other materials is still bonkers. How do you turn iron into chocolate? (unless that's being too rigid). I'm just simply saying that no matter how advanced a civilization gets technologically, there will never be a true utopia. Obviously this galaxy (the story) is no such place, however it's alot closer to the description of... Such a place. I don't even think the real Star Trek goes that far (unless they do and I don't know about it).
My view is that the rich won't die out. Sure, the older folks will loose theor wealth, however, the younger "pioneers" and entrepreneurs will be the ones to take the stage. The ones who invest in space travel, biotechnology, new ways of harvesting energy from planets, stars and eventually the whole galaxy. These would theoretically make up the new upper classes in a advanced spacefaring civilizations.
Out of all of the characters you have on sheets, I doubt any of them have the time or money to invest in large ambitious projects, the ones that make rich people rich.
My argument is not for capitalism, but rather the idea of spending and earning. Things again, won't be given away for free. One has to earn said things.
Wealthy people aren't just wealthy. Their people who's ideal job is to fund and coordinate between those who work for him. A worker is nothing without the boss, a boss is nothing without the worker.
So, are politics, ethics philosophy and morals topics you talk of regularly? It sounds like they are. You bring a trekkie, makes more sense if it was.
I like to talk about these things. Maybe we can have some debate or something? I don't know, not too man people why age who enjoy talking about these issues. But I'd enjoy chatting (and do enjoy) with you.
Anyways... If your willing to, I still need to think of thodr those questions I know I had more.

Maybe I should rephrase it another way: in this story universe, it has become very cheap to synthesise materials that this basically becomes a rounding error in costs if it's being used within reasonable limits. Although after the reconstruction after the Wellspring War there's food and shelter for everyone, not all living locations are the same. The concept of luxury still exists in the form of non-fungible items, such as residences in attractive locations, tailored services, or unique historical artifacts, but most of all, anything item enhanced with magic, since magic can't be replicated by a synthesiser. There are still some rewards for work. It's just that you don't need it to survive, but rather you can use it for more novel stuff. It's not always paid in currency, but also in privileges or compensating services. Most importantly, the system has basically raised the floor you can fall down to. One that does allow you to work yourself up again because you're given the basics to get your life in order again. It guarantees the bottom layer of the Pyramid of Maslow, and to some extent in terms of health and security the second layer as well. From this point, people can grow.
Earth was kind of the exception. They made a mess, and all subsequent meddling was to contain the mess (or subtle attempts to clean it up). But for the galactic community, the sheer potential of Earth was too important to risk something fatal to happen, though despite their efforts, it almost did.
Earth is a strange place in this universe, with an unusual diversity of sentient species and a plentiful magic that is as marvellous as it is dangerous. If it weren't for the meddling, others would've laid claim to it...
