1. That doesn't sound very sanitary. Maybe Slawvitz should be a different species?
2. The crew consists of four males (Thomas, Hawthorne, Jenare, Carl) and three females (Slawvitz, Mallory, Tout). Katie is not a member of the crew, but I asked for her to be in this pic because she's an important presence in the story.

My assumption was that they weren't hooves, but insectoid claws/appendages. They're probably just drawn in a more simplified style.
If I'm right then not only would holding medical instruments not be a problem, but she'd probably have the keenest control over fine manipulation of the entire crew.
