I started a job back in April that promised me 40 hours by May. By May they promised me 35 by June. Halfway through May however, I was SA’d by one of my coworkers. He was not a first time offender, he had done this to other women at my job, but they were silenced by management. I expressed what happened to my managers since there was no HR, and they told me it was a mistake and that they would talk to him. It was never mentioned again, and I couldn’t quit my job because me and my girlfriend are barely scraping by.
In the beginning of June I noticed strange skin spreading. It was white and itchy and it would flare up. I’ve had health problems my whole life, like my hearing loss and skin issues, but this was the first I had ever seen it. I ended up needing a biopsy, and called out of work for a few days. When I came back, they called me unreliable for calling out and said “even people who are sick come in.” They refused to give me hours for this, and not long after I was diagnosed with Goltz Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that only 1,000 people in the world have. If not managed, it can turn into an aggressive form of cancer. My own doctors couldn’t treat me.
So I came into work and felt horrible, and a customer ALLEGEDLY saw this and filed a complaint. I have yet to see a review or complaint, and actually think I was shopped. “Shopped” refers to companies that get paid by business to review their stores as customers, but the staff doesn’t know. After this, my boss fired me. While the guy who sexually assaulted me still works there.
I need to raise money for treatment and hopefully one day I will be able to sue. Lots of women don’t have a case here in Tennessee, but I want to try. I want to be able to speak out about what happened to me.
