Nathaniel wasn't the best at negotiations.
He liked to think he had some level of intelligence, he was a wizard after all, but the theory of something never held up to reality. He could read up on the art of diplomacy all he wanted, but so much of it came down to charisma. And, for all he had weird luck when it came to meeting certain kinds of ladies, he was far too awkward to be confident with these things. So, he decided to fall back on the traditional wizard standby when faced with an insurmountable problem: cheating.

The king nervously wrung his hands as he sat across from the wizard that had been contacted some weeks previously. While showing such obvious signs of discomfort and even fear would normally be something he'd refuse to allow, circumstances made it outright impossible. He wasn't, technically, worried about the wizard himself, his kingdom had several in its employ and he didn't doubt their ability to match or defeat the one before him. No, what he was worried about was currently casting a shadow over the entirety of his kingdom.
The ground rumbled and the very stones of his castle shook as the titan seated on the outskirts of his lands shifted slightly. The feline monarch trembled along with them, eyes darting around as he could hear some decorations falling from the walls. He gulped, trying to wet his dry throat. “W-was all this truly necessary?”
The wizard, in sharp contrast to him, simply shrugged, seemingly completely unbothered by the tremors the beast that accompanied him had caused. “I mean, you're the one who threatened my home.”
“I merely sent a warning!” The king exclaimed in disbelief. “Letting you know I was going to be claiming the land for my trade routes!”
“And you already knew I lived in that land. And, honestly, if you had phrased it as a request, we'd have been perfectly alright with your caravans passing through every few months. But, the 'under penalty of death' thing you added at the end really got my girls riled up.” He paused as the ground shook again, as if in response to his comment. “Honestly, be glad I managed to talk them down. The last guy who tried that had them tear down his whole kingdom.”
The king just sputtered with incredulity; he'd been aware of the ruler mentioned, but figured just using the land as a trade route wouldn't have been an issue. He didn't recall making the threat, maybe one of his scribes had added it to ensure compliance, but now the consequences were his to deal with.
Finally, he managed to get a hold of his nerves, even if only barely. “Just... just... I'm sorry!” He blurted out. “Please, don't destroy us!”
“I wasn't going to,” the wizard sighed. “Like I said, I managed to talk them down. I'm even okay with your trade routes going through my valley, just be aware of one thing.” He leaned forward on the table. “My girls are extremely protective of me; the first hint of you trying to sneak in assassins, or anything of the like, and your kingdom will be nothing but rubble and a crater.”
He didn't wait for a reply, simply standing up and walking out of the room. Leaving only a king who could barely stop himself from breaking down.

Back outside, Nathaniel couldn't help but look up and admire the beyond mountains figure of Talvi reaching high into the sky even while sitting down. Truthfully, she hadn't done much but sit down and occasionally move to get comfortable, but she was basically the whole reason he could have gotten away with what he'd just done.
Seemingly aware of his eyes upon her, the Sunwalker glanced over he shoulder and smiled. Nathaniel hadn't actually told her to face away from the kingdom, but she was all too familiar with her master's interests. They were going to have some fun later, ostensibly to celebrate successful negotiations, but she wasn't planning on downsizing anytime soon.

So, this time the story snippet has very little to do with the actual picture, mostly just following Nathaniel, the wolf wizard who is my self-insert for this setting, deal with the the circumstances that led to this picture. Still, really happy with both the picture and the snippet. Really need to get back into the habit of posting/writing more.
