It hurt.
The thought hammers into Yara's fleeting thoughts over and over, an insistent pound that never ends. It hurts, it hurts, it hurts.
The air runs foul with corrupt magic; with chaotic arcana. There's another shrill crack of glass as the gem within her chest splinters further, shining shards tainted with red trickling into the abyss.
She can feel her body breaking at its seams, succumbing to the sickness that rots away at it and to the corruption that gnaws at her mind. Inky streams of black exude from her form, a testament to its impurity— to her failure.
What hurts worse than any torment of her affliction, however, is them.
Once, they coveted her as a savior. An angel. A gentle giant— a friend. And, now, she only sees her own terrified eyes gazing back at her through gleaming metal soon to be coated red.
What leaves her parted jaws is unrecognizable even by her own ears— a wail, torn between a frenzied screech and a cry of agony. A plea for help only to be recognized with the brandish of blades and eyes that widen with fear of her.
She, who forsake her kin for her love of man, is now forsaken, by their hatred and sin manifested.
It hurts.

It wouldn't be me if I can't get a grimdark sort of piece every now and again lol. Warning, yap-central ahead because MAH LORE.
So, here we have a very much 'Bad End' Yara scenario going on that, honestly, hurts my own heart to look at. I want to explore the lore/world a bit more of Yara/her species (the Aetherenes) through art now that I've finally started to nail down some specifics. It's been... what, 4 years? Maybe more? A revisit and rethinking of some stuff is definitely needed. But one of the key details about them is the ability to balance mana/aether/whatever tf you wanna call it. Though I call them Dragons, I'd say they are more akin to mana/magic given form for a specific purpose by a higher being.
While I won't go into too much lore detail here of the whats and why and setting stuff, this art piece depicts the unfortunate result of what happens when an aetherene tries to purify a Dragon Vein (think, really big magic deposits) that's been corrupted and rendered unstable by others. While already a painful process, in very severe situations (or if the aetherene does it too frequently), it can corrupt the aetherene itself. This leads to either their demise, madness, or very likely, both.
I'd like to say this 'bad ending' happens in a world that's, likely, spiraling to a dark age. These veins of mana that were once left alone are now seized for conquest and used for their power without knowledge of the consequences. Yara and her kin, attempt, to 'fix' it— if left unstable and spewing out impurity, I think it'd be reallllyyy bad for... well, everyone. It's almost like... magical radiation? Maybe? Still figuring this one out. I think most of Yara's kin at this point would either be presumed dead through similar means/hunted down, or of the handful who said 'lol no' and essentially abandoned the mortal races.
Regardless, that's what brings us to this art piece— of Yara having that grim fate, merely trying to help the species her kind scorns and loathes, as she always does, and paying a price for it that shouldn't be hers to bear. It's supposed to be sad, a sort of unfairness that stings, and I like that it does. And cruelly enough, even with their 'betrayal', I think Yara still loves humans. I think, if given the chance, she would do it all again to protect them.
Also I swear humans are not always the bad guys in my settings LOL
I'm sorry for yapping so much lmao, I love mah lurah. To speak on the art itself a bit, I loooovee the way it looks, of course! The darker colors used on Yara, who I usually paint of picture of 'angelic', make me happy. I love how her usual pretty colors aren't present, and instead, a far more menacing, corrupting red and darker hue is used. The gem shattering is perfect too— since that gem is essentially like a 'heart' to her kind. And I love how the artist managed to capture a look of genuine terror and sadness on Yara's expression. Overall, it's just such a gorgeous and emotional piece that I really enjoy!
