Original Species: Boursuratt
The Bourusuratt is a massive, omnivorous mammal native to the northern reaches of the Continent of Elysium. It's the larger relative of the humble Hograt and Gruntling, as proven by recent studies. In the absence of bears on Elysium, the ancestors of the Boursuratt went down an evolutionary path that allowed them to fill that particular niche.
One of the most striking features of the Boursuratt is its thick mane. The dense fur on its neck and shoulders serves a purely defensive function, preventing creatures such as Tundra Drakes and Northern Tyrants from clamping down on those vulnerable parts. Conflicts with these formidable predators occur regularly, as the Boururatt is a prolific carrion thief. Using its bulk and size it often bullies other predators off their kills, claiming them for itself.
Stealing kills from other predators is the Boursuratt's main source of animal protein, at least in larger amounts. With no carrion available, this beast can survive on nuts, herbs, mushrooms, eggs (which it relishes), and small, slow-moving animals (most notably, newborn lambs, foals, and fawns). Boursuratts that live near the coast have also been seen taking down seals and feeding on whale carcasses.
The common thing with all potential food sources for the Boursuratt is that they aren't difficult to catch/chase down. While it is strong and durable, the Boursuratt is also quite slow in its movement; the highest registered speed of an adult individual was around 10 km/h (roughly 6 miles per hour). As long as you can outrun it, this creature is fairly safe to observe... problems occur when running is not an option...
