Now buckle up, this is going to be a multiple-part post...
Not long ago, I posted this: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/56668919/
Not long after it struck me that while Minnie Mouse is not in the public domain, her look-a-like from the Van Beuren (sp?) studio, one Rita, IS in the public domain. With Rita available to use, I got to wondering how I might use her services. On the left is how Rita appears in the 1930 cartoon CIRCUS CAPERS. On the right is my first attempt at re-designing the character for my own use.

Thank you!
Those first three Mickey Mouse cartoons fell into the public domain, but Disney retains copyright to the characters themselves. Specifically, the studio owns the names of the characters. And there's really no point in using Mickey Mouse if you can't call him Mickey Mouse...
But, there's Rita and (I think) Milton. They've been public domain for decades! They're basically clones of Disney's mice, and they're completely free to use!
