"What... am I looking at?" asked Lady Jasiri.
What she was looking at was a frozen cream-based dessert on a stick shaped like her head. Her confusion was less 'what' and more 'why'.
But the old hornbill Chamberlain was not skilled at reading Jasiri subtext.
"It is a frozen cream-based dessert on a stick, Lady Jasiri. Cleverly crafted by the royal confectioner to resemble your head!"
Jasiri took a deep breath and let it out. "I can see that, you blathering bag of bones!"
Before Lady Jasiri could hurl more invective at the hornbill, someone else spoke up.
"Don't scold the Old Bird too harshly, my queen-to-be," said King Leo, a small smile lighting up on his distinguished face. "He's so light, your roars will blow him away."
As ever, the sight of him calmed Jasiri's heart. He was a large lion, tall and broad. His once dark mane had gray running through it, his muzzle bore the scars of a long career as a general, but he was unbowed by age.
Lady Jasiri demurely bowed her head. "I did not mean to offend, your majesty. I was just... flummoxed that your Chamberlain is wasting time with this... frippery when our wedding is fast approaching! First the shirts and the stuffed toys and now... iced cream?"
King Leo put an arm around his bride-to-be. "Calm that passionate heart, love. I asked him to make all these things."
"Oh." Lady Jasiri did not know what to say to that. She had inadvertently insulted the king.
"I hear that unspoken 'why'," King Leo observed, amused.
"Why?" she spoke the unspoken question.
"The aristocrats tolerate me because I marry one of their own," he gestured at Jasiri. "The people love me for restoring a sense of stability to the country. It may seem like frippery, as you called it, but these items and a heavily promoted royal wedding will make you the symbol of this new age of peace. You may become even more beloved than I! Dunia has always loved its queens, especially ones as beautiful as you."
Jasiri blushed, as King Leo kissed her hand.
She voiced no more skepticism for the plans to market her likeness. But privately she doubted she could ever be more beloved than King Leo. And looking at the frozen treat, she doubted people would like them.

Years later...
"I loved these when I was younger!" Jessica Timbus proclaimed, as she pulled a Queen Jasiri popsicle from her mini-fridge. She tore the wrapper and bit off an ear.
The cool sophomore girl had invited freshman Maggie Taika to hang out in her dorm room, so they could reconnect after a year apart. It was not quite going as Maggie had imagined in her thirstiest of hearts.
"They stopped making them when King Leo died so my heart was broken two different ways that day. Then I found a local confectioner who sells bootlegs! He must have stolen the pattern from the castle or something... I don't know really know how popsicles are made."
Maggie looked from Jessica's Queen Jasiri shirt to the Queen Jasiri plush on her bed and then to the Queen Jasiri popsicle she was sucking on.
The black panther was maybe in love with the tigress but spending more time with her had let her discover that the hot, ex-cheerleader was also kind of a dork.
Geez, Queen merch was for kids, wasn't it?
---
A picture from a CombatRaccoon twitch raffle. Many people got turned into popsicles that day. When I won, I volunteered Jasiri to be dessertified because she does have the merch.
Which inspired the silly story above.
When I was getting those Jessica pictures, the Jasiri merch didn't really mean anything because my characters weren't really sharing the same world. And now they are so I guess there was just a whole bunch of Jasiri merchandise.
The idea I've had is that it was an intentional - and successful - attempt to popularize Jasiri among the common people who would have only known her as the daughter of some aristocratic family that lucked into marrying the king.
But a whole generation of kids and teens grew up with Jasiri's face everywhere. She is massively popular among her people.
She discontinued some of the products after King Leo's death. Especially the popsicles. Nostalgia is what it is, though, and enterprising people have kept the tradition alive and frozen.
Anyway, this is a fun twitch raffle pic of Jasiri as a popsicle which let me formalize some worldbuilding ideas I've been pondering. Also, I may turn it into an avatar for the summer.
