And from the waves of Nun, the primordial ocean, a lotos blossom arose and as the blossom opened its petals in reverence to Ra four young men were born from it.
This is a small impression of what the egyptian mythology has to tell about the four sons of Horus. Duamutef is one of them and this piece shows him in his Divine Cradle.
The lotos that appears as symbol in multiple religions has many meanings. That which is often seen as lotos in the Egyptian murals is more likely a Nymphaea caerulea, a blue waterlily. These flowers are known to contain substances that cause a slight euphoria and increase the awareness. Some Egyptologists think that priests drenched the lilies in wine, because said substances solve in alcohol and then drank this wine for ceremonies to have otherworldly experiences.
Another reason for the popularity of Nymphaea caerulea in Egyptian mythology is its behavior towards the sun, personified as the God Ra. The petals open uppon the first sunlight, then the head of the plant follows the trail of the sun and when the night breaks the petals close again.
