This is a canon-sequel short spinoff story of the Plushables book (linked below).
It was year 2081, and Plushables, or robotic pet plushies capable of doing unbelievable tasks or tricks, have existed for five decades, stealing the hearts of both robotic and living pet owners. Throughout the years, the Plushables’ only weakness was being drenched in water, but they could now be afraid no longer, as innovations improved their robotic bodies to be completely water resistant. This led to the creation of both aquatic and semi-aquatic Plushables, including the otter model.
As one who was afraid of being immersed in water, David did not like to swim, despite his house having a private swimming pool. His parents had tried to hire a swimming instructor for a week, but the situation did not improve either. He had a constant fear that he could not resurface if he dove into the water for too long, scenes playing where he drowned even at the shallow end. Discovering another solution, his parents bought him an otter Plushable, to act as a pseudo swimming teacher.
Changing into his swim trunks, David saw his two parents beckoning him into the pool, and popping up beside him was the otter Plushable. Bending down and staring at the otter, he scratched his head in confusion.
“David, that’s your new swimming instructor!” His mother voiced out.
“Hello David, I’m Ottie the otter Plushable. Come, step into the shallow end with me.”
“But I’m scared…”
“Don’t worry, you may hug me in the pool for comfort if you feel that way.”
Following the otter Plushable into the pool, David stood in the shallow waters, watching the otter swim around him in a circle, encouraging him to start swimming too. As his head took a plunge to do a simple breaststroke, he struggled and his anxieties of drowning triggered, causing him to stop almost immediately. Ottie swam and nudged her nose against his chest, trying to convince him to follow her.
“Wrap your arms around my body. I will help you float!” The otter suggested as she turned around to give him an area of her back to hold. Embracing the otter Plushable in his arms, her fur felt so warm and squishy, giving him the sensation he was in a heated pool or hugging a stuffed animal in bed. Leaning his upper body onto the Plushable, she acted as a fluffy floatation board. “Now, just kick like you’re swimming!”
He gave it one more chance, propelling himself forward with the strength of his kick, and a little help from the Plushable’s tail below. He was finally swimming laps! Once David had become more confident, he began to let go of Ottie and use his arms instead of relying on floating on the Plushable. Ottie ducked under the surface of the water and resurfaced beside him, swimming alongside him as she monitored his every movement.
At the end of the lap, David exclaimed, “I finally did it! Thank you, Ottie!” He gave the otter Plushable another hug in the water as his parents clapped at overcoming his fears of the pool. From then on, with a swimming companion to keep him comforted and safe, his days of fearing and avoiding the pools are over.
