It was pretty significant. You could definitely feel it. It was particularly freaky on the roof deck, which got closed if it was too windy. On 9/11, lots of people tried to call others. The cell phone antenna were mostly all on one of the towers. No service...
I was working on the ground floor of a three-story building in suburban Toronto that day. My mother phoned me up in almost a panic and said she thought I should go home because the terrorists might crash a plane into the building. Bad as things were, I had to reassure her that I felt our building was probably pretty far down on the list. "Home" for me, by the way, was an 18-story apartment building... logic deserts people in emotional moments like that.
I lived in Minneapolis at the time, and the city closed the IDS tower and the Mall Of America. I just shook my head and said they were not politically significant targets.
