Kaytu Speaks - First try at lip-syncing! (Animation)
https://e621.net/posts/4911575
EDIT: The voice has been confirmed to be
Trendane! Still no idea who got them to make the voicelines for me, but one part of the mystery is solved.
So, years ago, if I recall correctly (it's been a while) someone had an interest in me doing some real animating, or maybe they just wanted to see me try lip syncing? When I mentioned I had no idea how to animate or even rig for such a thing, they sent me some audio files to play with for practice. I told them it'd probably be a long time, but I'd get around to it eventually.
Anyway, it's years later and I'm feeling like it's time to push my animation skills a bit. Filth is fun but you can only get so far when 90% of what you animate is hip thrusting. So I spent a few days setting up a lip-sync rig for the big 'yeen because he seemed like the best fit for the voice clips I had, and got to work trying it out.
Got it done, and went to the person I thought I got the audio clips from so I could get the voice actor's name to give them credit, only for them to say they have no memory of the event. I sent one of the clips as reference, and it didn't help- it wasn't them. Which begs the question-
Who the fuck did I just spend all day lip syncing to, then? Where the heck did I get these clips? If you know who the voice behind the 'yeen is (or if you're the one who got 'em for me) please speak up so I can give proper credit!
Anyway, besides that little mystery, things went... not too bad? I mean the results aren't fantastic, I don't have nearly as much expressive ability on his face as I'd like and the lip syncing is kinda mediocre as well, but for a first attempt I'm fairly pleased. You're always allowed to be shit when you do something for the first time, and there were a few firsts happening all at once here, hah. I learned a lot about what I need rig-wise and how to go about animating speech, so a successful few days overall.
I hope you like mildly suggestive massive 'yeen man. Let me know if you'd like to see more of my characters gabbing. (Or if you think you might be interested in contributing random voice lines in the future for further lip-syncing practice?)
Also this has nothing to do with them, but I'ma shout 'em out anyway because they're what let me spend time on stuff like this: thanks to the patreon peeps! https://www.patreon.com/ruaidri
There's not really any unique content over there because paywalls suck and I make stuff that's too spicy for patreon anyway, but the support helps me do silly things like this. So thanks, if you decide to hop on!

You're doing the 'Ru' thing again--Having a first try that's epic and amazing, and critically downplaying yourself :3
This looks so good! SO good! I wouldn't question this in a full animation. Is it Pixar levels of perfect? No, but you're also not Pixar, so don't compare yourself to a million-man-hour animation system on your first attempt!
I'd love to see you incorporate speech into your animations, I think that would be so amazing! I know you aren't doing long-format animations anymore, but I'm sure there's also ways to bring this into short animations or loops.
Also yes, this voice style really fits Kaytu, ha. Sultry, deep, slow, confident. A good choice and great work!

Hah, thanks! Got a long way to go before we're even entering the same planet as pixar, but a journey of a thousand miles, and all that...
If I get good at it, and people like it... maybe! It did take a while but not as horrendously long as I'd imagined it would. The rigging for it was the worst part, haha.

Hey man, trying to compare yourself to Pixar at this stage really isn’t too fair to yourself, I mean hell, a lot of the tech you’re using now was straight up *invented* by Pixar, they’ve been in the game for a long time now :<
For a first try, by someone who hasn’t ever done any amount of lip-syncing before, this is a great attempt! It’s getting clear that you’re really growing with 3D stuff, I’d hate to see you beating yourself up over silly expectations Xp
Cheers! ^^

I think that's Trendane, though I have no idea where the clips are from. XD

That icon works for this comment very well, haha.
Seems like that kind of voice might work for her, perhaps?

Oh! That'd be cool- just, I'm not 100% sure if or how often I'll be doing more lip syncing stuff, even just setting up a model for it took me days of work and that doesn't even count the animation itself, hah. So I can't promise anything, or at least it could be a while (it took me years to get around to this, hah), so if it'll take a lot of time or work you might not want to. I'll leave that up to you, just be aware! :P
Visemes!!! Eeeeee! You're already putting more facial expression into the mouth than the base visemes and sound detection that a lot of things do, so yay. There are official lists of visemes that you can use as a base and then add variations for expression. Then you can even auto-process the model based on the audio phonemes to get the starting point of the visemes and work from there. EEEEEEE!
Wow, I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone quite this excited about lip syncing before. :P
One advantage to just doing everything manually I guess, I can put in as much detail as I want, up to the limits of my abilities at least. Though if this becomes a thing I do often I might look into a little automated help, we'll see! Could be a jumping off point at least.

I do a lot of stuff in VR, where the syncing and processing is done live to both the shape of my face as well as the sound on my mic. ^.^; ...*
Knowing the visemes lets you understand how the mouth moves relative to sound. Then you can rig with bones and/or with blend shapes and assign the proper shape to each viseme.
Using automatic processing as the base definitely provides a jumping off point that a lot of games stop at and that most good studios start with. The automated phoneme to visemes provides the 'good enough' to have a base, including timing and detected information and recommendations. Then everything gets adjusted on the timeline after that to add the details and specifics to that part of everything and getting it Just Right. Consider: You don't model every fur by hand. You use automation to make the fur and then adjust it to be perfect. And when coloring a texture, you probably use a bucket fill or large brush to get the base color - constrained by the UV map portions - then detail further from there, rather than creating each pixel one at a time. ;) Broad stroke tools get the big picture in and save you more time to enjoy the details.
(* Because I do stuff in VR some little silly part of my brains goes squee and imagines you making VRC avatars with amazing viseme and expression blendshapes. ._. I'll see myself out now.)

You're never too old for that! I'm 47 and I still do VR, and there are a lot of folks in their fifties and sixties and seventies in VRChat. It's absolutely amazing. And free! Admittedly the most expensive free game out there - and not for the game itself at all - but still free.

Holy god damn fucking shit Ru, not what I was expecting at all! God damn those voice lines are great! Gawd damn!!
Yeah, for a first attempt, that's really good! I don't think I would be able to do any better if it were my first try, not that I am on the same level animating anyway!
You know what I want. XD

holy cow that voice matches him so well, deep and firm but also soft, and you lip synced it so well!
also you mention contribute voice lines? i know id love to, i've been experimenting a bit with doing little skits and stories with vrchat on tiktok, not sure which of my characters the voice would suit but heres an example: https://www.tiktok.com/@aidenthefen.....35996829976096

Aw, thank you!
Was just sorta floating the idea to see if there was any general interest- which apparently there is based on all the people sending me voice stuff now, haha. If I decide to give it another go I'll probably toss up a journal or something asking who's interested at the time, and by all means let me know if you are when the time comes!

holy FUCK. Ru. RUUUU. You will soon be unstoppable.
Okay, I had to read about all your problems to look back and force myself to admit how the synching is approximately a quarter-second late or early in several places.
Quarter-second. on your FIRST try.
..wait it's all BY HAND and took ONE day WHAAAT dksjhlareajnhdsahjdksa
You will be inundated with samples. I doubt many (any?) of them will mind going lewd.

Looks really good there, Ru! :D
A few things that seemed off in the second half, especially that last "o" shape not quite strong enough on the "bend OH-ver" part at the end there, so it feels unnatural to me, but otherwise, that was real nice for a first try! :D
When I was doing my class on blendshapes (way back in 2005), what I found worked really well to "sell" the illusion better was to put the shape start 1-2 frames ahead (depends on the character, lighting, scene, etc.); for some reason, it seemed to work better, as if our brains are expecting the sound from the lips, and it looks more "flowy". So I dunno if that's something you'd want to try for yourself, see if you feel the same or not. :X
Outside of that, I mean, if you ever feel like trying me out for some VA stuff, feel free to! I got a male-ish voice, though a bit high-pitch I'm told. And the obvious slight hint of French-Canadian accent in it. X3
I also got decent at modding my own voice (my "zug zug" is pretty spot-on, I'm told X3 )

Still, amazing work there, poss! :D
Looking forward to more. <3

What the heck!!! ...this is fantastic.
A glimpse of what a fully (furry) novel/story/series would look like.
If your animations where allready excellent, this right here leaves me thirstier than ever wanting for more. XD
Fantastic work.
EDIT: With todays economy, I have to strongly thank you again for being able to keep you work public and without a paywall. ...as you may know, the wallets these days arent as deep as many of us would like them to be haha. So THANKS.

Ruaidri. This is amazing. Well done. But if I may. He could have used a tiny bit more of a smirk on the "bend over" part. And maybe an eye twitch as he looks between each eye of the person he's looking at him. But that's like.. Don't let me minimize this incredible work at all. It's really amazing.
This will get interesting with AI generated or AI enhanced real voices for sure.
I made a short clip for my son-in-law where I wished him a nice birthday - in turkish. I do not speak it at all, all it needed was a short video clip of me speaking. The AI did the translation and the lip sync. He was literally shocked. :)

was.. not expecting that voice to come out xD;
Don't forget to over-exaggerate your EE's and I's on your phonetics, for canine faces it's better to get all the side chops to stretch showing more teeth. Try to learn to animate more complex phonetics like F's The's and T's. Don't forget to remember your negative inflections and positive inflections "hi! it's nice to meet you!" and "oh.. it's you again"
