Barruk has succumbed to the quicksands claim over his head. His world became nothing but darkness and a mix of sand and mud. The free arm he had been trying to keep above the sandy muddy surface was the only means of salvation. He hoped rescue would come and he would feel someone's, anyone's hand claim what remained of his arm and hand above the slightly quivering surface which was rapidly returning to it's deceptive sandy surface. Only a small indent of where his nose has been and his exposed arm would suggest anything wrong had happened. As what air he held onto gave way he lowered his arm, giving up what hope there would be for rescue.
