Hope you didn't lose anything important. Had that happen once with a complete hard drive meltdown... damn thing had black-grey streaks all over it. I think it was a power surge from a lightning storm that blacked out my town for a good few days, but I don't know. Still piecing some old corrupted files back together on my new laptop... but indeed, backups are a freaking godsend~

I see, blackouts are usually horrible and therefore would be needed as a backup power for avoiding files corrupt!
