I don't think they were in either M&L game. Maybe Thousand Year Door; I never played that one.

I just assumed as such, being that they're called Ninji and wear all black(or so I thought. I actually thought the teeth of the sprites were buttons or something).

Well Actually the last game Ninji was in was Super Mario: All Stars.

Actually in SMB2, Color was dependent of background.

I'm going on SMW, since it wasn't terribly limited, and if you wanna bring ports of SMB2 up, then the last game they were in was Super Mario Advance.

I recall something like that from the instruction manual for SMB2. I don't remember the exact wording, though.
