Oh in close quarters, you use a hand crossbow. Before flintlocks became a thing, it's how they fought with ranged weapons in tight confines. Two shots, then weapons drawn. Shoot the one threatening the hostage. Take out his nearest and either a. reveal more. or b. draw your weapons and taunt the rest of them to come after you
