F-35 Lightning II
A Madison based F-35 Lightning II was on "Up close display" at EAA this year. Note the armed guard. Seems the F-35 is seriously hated in Madison by certain left leaning folks since it arrived earlier this year. A:Its too loud, B: its a Military jet, C: "Can carry Nuclear weapons" D: It scares children and people with PTSD. They've tried to get the aircraft banned from Madison for a year, even threatened lawsuit and even damaging the aircraft if able to. From what the guards told me, they even need to protect the jet from radicals from jumping the rope and attacking the jet even at EAA. Plus they have weekly protests at Truax outside the main gate demanding the jets removal and closure of Truax field.
Admittedly, its an expensive piece of hardware, $135 million per unit!
Still an impressive aircraft!
Thats an F-15 Eagle behind the F-35.

Oh, they have no problem, whatsoever with some people having nuclear weapons.
Their fondest dream is for Iran and Hamas/Hezbollah to have nukes to (I quote): "Bring some actual balance of strength & respect to the Middle East, and force the Zionist Occupational Government (ZOG) to treat the true owners of Occupied Palestine like human beings." (blah blah blah).
And yes, I heard variations of this same "argument" spouted by several different fine individuals over the years. The scary part is that they were as serious as a heart attack about it.

Oh yes, I concur because those turbofans deliver much more thrust than the Eagle, but the comparison of one jet aircraft being an issue because of noise while an objectively louder machine is next to it does not make any sense. I would imagine they complain about all the fighter jets there.
We had a battle-ready F-16 on display at Wings Over Alpena one year. Also with two SPs on security detail.
For a time, there were a group of little old ladies/militant nuns infiltrating airshows to damage first-line military aircraft with ball peen hammers. Most have assumed ambient temperature by now.

If the "SPs" were USAF, they were APs (Air Police). That said, I'm reminded of a story I heard when I was in Japan. A Major General wanted to enter the building where I worked. However, he didn't have clearance nor a badge to enter. An A1C AP stepped in front of the General and told him to halt until he got clearance to enter the building. The General was none too happy about it and fumed the whole time he had to wait. Finally, a Major came out and signed for the General to enter the building. When the General returned, he asked the AP what he would have done had the General forced the issue. The AP said, "Sir, I would have splattered your guts on that wall." The General looked at him for a moment before saying, "Good job, Airman." I don't know if that's a true story but knowing some of the APs I've known, I don't doubt it for half a second.
Is that what they call them now? I left around 2007 and we were called SF, Security Forces. Depending on the base we were either armed with M9s and driving Impalas and responding to domestic disputes, God I hated living in Nebraska...
Or we were riding in HUMVs with a 60 and later a M249. I usually carried the ammo along with the rounds for the 203 while my hun carried the gun.
Kinda miss those days though...

I do remember my recruiter calling them that when I was signing up. Said I'd get a nice desk job in Hickam, no prob.
After basic and 3 days into tech school 9/11 happened. Our training got accelerated, we got changed to Security Forces, and within 4 weeks my Floridian ass got sent to the middle of nowhere Nebraska where the snow went over my head. And they gave me a 249. And shortly after, off to the sandbox for the summer before coming right back to redneckland in the winter.
Apparently instead of being just a military cop we became the Air Force's infantry too.

And the thing I hate the most is all my Army, Marines, and Navy relatives keep teasing me about what I 'flew' in the 'chair force' and how many coffee runs I had to do in the 'air farce', and then I show them the pics of me in my Kevlar helmet, flak vest, M60 and up armored HUMV and it shuts them up really quick.
"Which Air Force did you join?!" they'd sometimes ask me.
"US Air Force ya ignorant fucktard." I'd tell em back.
...still wished I joined the Navy like my pops though.

I remember when we got a chance to guard some F-22s during a Red Flag about 15 years or so ago and I was shocked at how tiny it was next to the F-15s. I'm sure they were smaller than the 18s and 16s we had around too.
So expensive and it can only carry 6 missiles max?
At least from what the crew told me when chatting with them the 22s and 35s can link up with multiple other crafts such as 18s being used as missile boats while the 22/35 can tag distant targets when they are farther up ahead and enjoying the benefits of stealth.
Sounds impressive at least.

The 115th FS had F-16's as well before converting to the 35s. The liberal leftists hated them too. They had an utter melt down a few years when a F-16 was forced to drop an empty drop tank into lake Mendota due to a broken bracket. The drop tank landed in the middle of the lake without any mishap. BUT it was witnessed by several people who mistook the tank as bomb. And the howling ensured!! "THAT COULD HAVE DESTROYED THE CITY!!!" "THAT JET WAS TRYING TO BOMB THE CITY!!" "THAT COULD HAVE EXPLODED AND SEND A MASSIVE TIDAL WAVE TOWARDS UW!" Some fisherman in his boat fishing a distance away, went over, tied the tank and towed it towards a dock since it floated like a big pontoon. The media was quickly there as the Air Force showed up with a truck and a couple airmen grabbed it and simply tossed it in the back of the truck. The citizens nearby treated it as if was a live bomb. Despite the Air Force showing the media it was simply an empty drop tank . The Mayor then demanded that the Air Force NOT fly over the city because that empty tank COULD HAVE EXPLODED LEVELING THE CITY!! The Air Force , to calm down the lunatics, altered their flight path out of the city when taking off.
And Yes, the hyperly fragile locals even complained when Truax once housed A-10s "Because they are loud!" and "They are armed with a massive cannon!" But the two biggest complaints over the F-35 was A: The loud engine, B: IT CAN CARRY A NUCLEAR WEAPON!!!" An Air Force spokesman said "Literally anything that flies can carry a nuke." OMG!!! ABOLISH THE AIR FORCE!!!
During Farmers Market around the Capital on Saturday mornings I still see the Hyper Left covering their ears as if a Fire Truck siren was going off 10 feet away or they flip off the passing jet grumbling over the "Display of Jingoism!"
