I was a bit stumped on the ending for this one, which caused this to get delayed. Hopefully it's good enough
I personally headcanon the real King is now in your room causing chaos in your body. Alternatively, you arrive back at the Owl House only for the real King to soon appear not long after, resulting in a lot of confusion. Whatever one's more entertaining tbh.
You were wandering back home after a busy day, following your usual route through the forest. You let out a forlorn sigh as you made your way through the drab and empty woods. If only you had remembered to charge your headphones before heading out. Now you were having to do this with only your thoughts for company.
Let's see here… questions on what game you're going to play once you get home. A reminder to wash your clothes and bedsheets. A PSA on you needing to eat more fruit and drink more water… and a memory of you calling the teacher mom in front of the whole class back in primary school. Ech, that's enough thinking. Maybe there's something to occupy your mind around here?
Tree, Tree, Bush, Tree, Dead Tree, a discarded beer can. Wow, now you remember why you always decided to listen to music instead of focusing on all this stuff. This forest was just plain depressing. Oh, wait, there was something different. You'd make your way over to the side of the path, picking up the object and brushing it off. It seemed to be a curved claw of some kind? But it was way too big to be from any animal you knew of from around these parts, even bigger than a bear's! If those donuts were to be believed. Huh, the bottoms all jagged, like it had broken off of something. So… this wasn't even its full size? Just how large was this thing even supposed to be?!
It was weird, the longer you held the claw, the more and more you felt it was special, that it was important to you somehow. You just didn't want to throw it away. You went to stick it in your pants pockets, but of course your phone and wallet were in the way. With a shrug, you decided to just hold onto it for now as you continued down the path. Oh well, it wasn't like you were using them for anything else, or like the claw was that heavy. You could just carry it until you arrived back home.
As you continued down the path, you failed to notice the hand holding the claw start to change, fur spreading out from your palm down to your wrist and coating your thumb, more focused on just making your way back through the forest and getting home. Neither did you notice as your fingers slowly began to merge into two, hardening into thick claws that despite their bulky appearance, were still able to hold a strong grip on the mysterious treasure.
What didn't pass your notice was the forest changing. Even though it was the same path you'd always taken to get home, it felt different. Everything seemed more vibrant, seemingly growing in size, trees and bushes towering over you. Part of you was concerned, had you taken a wrong turn somewhere? But that couldn't be right, there had been no forks in the road, had there? Maybe you should turn back… or maybe… you could see where the path led? It'd only take a few extra minutes at worst, and you could always retrace your steps later, right?
On your way down the path, you couldn't help but feel your imagination take hold, painting over your walk with new hues. This was no longer just a walk, it was an adventure through a foreign jungle, of which you were the king! As part of your duties, you of course had to patrol your territory to ensure it was safe from danger, because what ruler didn't look out for their subjects? Of course, being a jungle, it only made sense you weren't human, instead this proud wolf with ebony fur. It was… a bit silly, but for some reason oddly charming as a result? And you just couldn't help but fall into a rhythm as you continued onwards with a sense of pride in each step.
Your clothes grew darker as they merged with your steadily shrinking frame, transforming into a coat of bushy fur that coated your entire body, keeping you warm as you continued your adventure through the forest.
Your shoes slipped free of your shrunken feet, being left behind, but you barely paid them any attention as you continued onwards, clutching the horn a little tighter in your paw, even as your toes hardened and fused into two hardened claws, almost completely identical to those currently gripping the treasured item. Everything felt so familiar, yet so… new? You couldn't help but feel a bit excited. But why? It was just the same old forest as before. Or… was it?
Your trek was soon cut short by a flowing river, shallow yet rushing rapids that threatened to soak anything that fell in. Now you were certain that this wasn't your usual route, but this new found challenge only seemed to further inspire your curiosity, that whatever lay on the other side just had to be worth it. But how to get across? There was a toppled log forming a makeshift bridge, but you didn't know if you'd be able to balance your way across it without tumbling off, let alone if it'd be able to hold your weight. There were some stones that just barely stood above the surging river, but they looked to be soaked. Even with your strong footclaws, you were liable to slip and hurt yourself! Wait, footclaws? Oh… right. Your imagination must be making you slip up. You could practically see yourself in their metaphorical shoes.
As you contemplated whether or not to just walk through the stream and save yourself the trouble, a stray thought entered your mind, another tempting offer from your imagination, which seemed to be turbocharged today. It proposed a more exciting outlook. Gone was the meagre stream that would let you off with just the soaking of your fur.
No, before you lay rushing rapids, and the only way across was the fiendish troll bridge. It was a risky venture, but you were a brave hero! Boldly you approached the trunk, having to jump and pull yourself up in order to scale its surface, composing yourself as you looked over at the other side of the river. You could do this…
Steady… Steady… you slowly inched your way across the perilous bridge, claws gripping onto the bark as you took one small step at a time, a thick bushy tail sprouting out behind you to help you keep your balance.
You triumphantly leapt down from the trunk, celebrating your accomplishment, before stopping and looking around, a bit embarrassed. Why did you act like that? All you did was cross a river without getting wet. And yet… you felt good. Proud of yourself. It was… nice? It was like you'd gained a new source of confidence in yourself
This other… more childish make-believe view of the forest was also making your trip back home more enjoyable… would it really hurt to indulge in it for a bit longer? Nobody would know… would they?
Oh, what's the harm. You'd let your imagination run wild as you continued your stroll, letting this more exciting and colourful world take shape around you, filled with strange monsters and alien plant life. It was like you had stepped into an entirely new world.
Half-unnoticed to you however, these strange fantastical creatures and fauna weren't just in your imagination. The forest was indeed starting to change, becoming more colourful, and filled with plants and trees that definitely weren't a part of Earth.
You found yourself having to duck under a snaking vine, clearly a trap set by some nefarious villain, feeling the weight of something settling on your head, your claws clacking against its smooth bony surface as you felt around for whatever it could've been. Nothing… Oh well. You continued onwards, failing to notice the skull that comprised most of your head stretch forwards, forming a canine skull, with little fangs popping into being along its side, nor the two growing horns, the tip of one having broken off.
You continued onwards, your large yellowed eyes darting around on the lookout for imaginary threats, inhuman, yet filled with a childlike innocence and wonder. This was so much fun! And yet… you had the strange suspicion that something was off about this picture, that you'd forgotten something very important…
Finally, you felt something brush against your foot, spying a large golden circle tied to a piece of leather that was NOT a dog collar. Oh! Your medallion! That was close. You picked it up, and after fiddling with the latch for longer than you cared to admit due to your short limbs and thick claws, finally managed to clip it back around your neck where it belonged. Just how had it gotten loose in the first place? Oh well… that was a question for another time. You could see the exit from the forest!
You wandered your way out of the forest just in time to spy a young brown haired girl calling out your name. As soon as you laid eyes on her, more memories came pouring in. It was Luz!
“Oh! King! Did you go off on one of your adventures agaaaain”
King? That wasn't your name, but… it still felt so familiar. Like a friendly nickname. It didn't feel right to correct her.
“Huh? No, I just… went on a walk through the forest, and then there was this fierce river, and then I was in another world, and there was this huge bird and-” The growing smug grin on her face made you pause. Okay, it did sound very outlandish when you said it out loud, especially in that high pitched voice of yours. Thankfully her attention drifted away from your flustered face to your treasure clenched tightly in your claws.
“Aww, your horn fell off again… Don’t worry, when we get back to the Owl House I’ll make sure to use the extra strong glue this time. And you’ll be able to tell Eda allll about your adventure as well! That should cheer her up a little” Luz would say with a friendly grin.
“Owl House? So do you live with owls, or is it a house in the shape of an Owl or…” This time you were cut off by Luz rubbing your head, eliciting an impulsive “weh?” In response.
“Okay little guy. Maybe you've gotten a bit carried away with your imaginary adventures. You didn't go and eat any strange fruit, did you? Oh, I'm sure it'll be fine. I won't tell Eda if you don't tell her I let you run off, okay?”
Not really understanding, you simply just nodded as the young girl, witch? Held your claws and started leading you through a once again strange yet oddly familiar Town.
Well, hopefully this ‘Eda’ person would be a bit more understanding of your current predicament. But then again, it wasn't like there was anything inherently… dangerous about sticking around, was there? This place seemed fun, much more fun than your own world. What harm would there be in spending just a little longer on this adventure~
