Thought I should make a little map to further conceptualize by recent hyena x croc drawings; lend some context to the shenanigans.
So, I figure the lion prides are the traditional rulers of the area by the coast. Their people were originally called Assadon by the other groups they displaced. Both their lands and the bordering river reflect this old name. The lions however, refer to themselves by names specific to their individual tribal kingdoms. There are several such kingdoms in Assadonia, and as rulership is based on family lineage, the cooperation among the various leonine kingdoms is liable to fluctuate from generation to generation. The most dominant tribe is the Maheen. This has been the case for centuries.
The lions live mostly to the north of the river but can also be found farther south. Those in the north are continually routing the hyena tribes, often with the help of zebra subjects, as there are numerous zebra clans in northern Assadonia and the borderlands. While the hyena are significantly less powerful than their southern neighbors, they have managed to remain a presence due to their numbers and cunning.
The third major group is the crocodilian Ma'hamba. There is a great lake to the north that bears their name. In this lake is a series of small islands upon which the crocodiles hold their ancient capital. Traditionally, the Ma'hamba have stayed within the periphery of the lakes, but in recent generations, have been expanding down the Assadin River. There are rumors that this expansion is motivated by a desire to rediscover a mythical homeland at the delta of the river. Regardless, the increased presence of the crocodiles has created an upheaval along the river that is beginning to be felt by the Assadon, and it is likely only a matter of time before these two great nations come into direct conflict.
The hyena clans, meanwhile, have managed to form a tentative alliance with the crocodiles, which may allow them to bolster their position and reassert themselves against their old rivals in the south.

Seems like the hyena's made the correct choice allying with the croc studs.
Really liking more and more the setting :D
I think that's what informs that long-term motivation of the crocs and explains units appearing more routinely along the riverbanks in the north. Up until this point, they've more or less kept to themselves around that big lake in the north, and I'm sure the lions will not be pleased when they first start spotting them along their stretch of the river. Various run-ins are bound to happen.
