When I check out music, a good icon helps, but I want to hear more traditional music -- classical, standards, etc. I good original song is a good choice, too.
One thing that will turn me off every single time is unimaginative techno/trance where you start off with eight measures of a repeated loop, then one voice is added, and repeated for another eight measures, then another voice gets added... Usually by the second voice, I am bored out of my mind and look elsewhere. At the very LEAST shorten down the loops to 4 measures.

I am VERY honored to be Spotlighted and I send out a BIG Congratulations to wall winners in this months spotlight and to all those who voted.
Also when I listen to music I wait to see if something in a track will grab me, usually anything that is robust and well put together well thought out and well preformed. Anything that is rushed or as the fellow above said, Mindless techno that constantly relies on one loop throughout an ENTIRE sequence of the track is just plain....put it bluntly UNIMAGINATIVE and DULL. I am not a big techno fan but I will admit there ARE some that have grabbed my attention.
Also what will also grab me hook line and sinker is because I make my own music I have a specific way of thinking and how I arrange my tracks as well as put as much effort and passion into my works. If I find a track that has these main key areas
-Well arranged
-Well composed
-Detailed
-Properly preformed
-good recording
I will sit and listen to the entire track and even if not I still try to give benefit of the doubt to any tracks that I find dull.
Thas My two cents

Lol awwwr *huggles* seems I am completely off when I thought it was a voter thing heh heh
I imagine you and the boi got a kick out of the new track, I had a LOT of fun creating it and lo and behold its NOT the only War video game piece I am working on. A certain soldier is on his way with a rendition from a certain PS3 Video game which is primed to be my FIRST attempt at a Video game cover piece.

yay! thanks for the birthday shout out ^_________^
my advice for getting heard... listen to other people's stuff and comment. Make friends among musicians here, because your friends are the ones who are gonna check out your page :3
what do I look for in a song? hmm... when I'm listening on FA, I always wanna listen to the whole song before I comment, which is why I get backed up sometimes. If it hurts my ears in the beginning, though, I don't really listen much longer. I might skim through the rest of the song to see if there's anything else to hear, and if something catches my ear, I stop and listen.

When I click on these, I'm just hoping to hear some fresh sounds I've not heard before, though that's something terribly subjective according to my own experiences and breadth of knowledge in music. I know I won't hear something like that each and every show, but it's the little nugget I always hope for--some reason to go check out the artist's page and see what else he/she has in store.
This is all, of course, when I haven't submitted a song of my own and am eagerly hoping to be featured myself. *shameless* :-P

what i look for is interesting sequences and tymbers. can't tell a thing from icon's or thumbnails so i don't even try. i just know certain musicians on here who most of the time do things i like.
some of whom are better then anything commercial/professional. i need to look up some of the ones you feature too. i can name names but i'll probably miss someone if i do. some several.
foxamore i think is number one anywhere. tundra fox in his genre. and he's finally branching out a bit. then there's sage, juniper, luchs, erattic, sometimes shade, dabs and yuri.
those are the ones that come to mind, and each are of course, almost totally different genre's from each other. and yes, i know some of them only do all their music with software, while others are actually multi-talented multi-instrumentalists. so they can't really be compared very well with each other, but i mention them also to illustrate the range of what i look for.
basically the unusual that is so often lost in professionals becoming polished. which is how i feel, the same way, about the visuals.
if you were to try to pin me down to genre's they'd have to include ambient space sound sculpture that may or may not be music in any traditional sense, on the one paw, symphonic composition on another, something called filk, on a third, fusion, techno, berlin school/early 70s electronica. basically there's only a couple of genre's i don't much care for, and those are the most mundane, though even in them something wonderful is occasionally done.
but there really isn't anything i can point to as a recognition symbol i can count on. every time i stumble on someone i haven't heard before, who has posted their music on here, i check out at least a couple of their submissions. that's the only way i can really tell if they're doing things i like.
