As I mentioned in my post on the Faerstow flag, Jay’s main connection to Terona is through a tragic event which impacted ties between the two countries. https://www.furaffinity.net/view/57285272/ Jay hails from the town of Westfolk, a modest, tight-knit community with a rich seafaring history. The green wolf grew up enthralled by stories of past Westfolkmen’s adventures on the waves and his town’s resilience in the face of tragedy and triumph. Jay is proud of his town’s traditions linked to the sea and considers himself a Westfolkman first and a Faerstowite second.
His passion for history results in him completing a two-year program at the University of Terona. Although he ends up getting more than what he bargained for, positive and negative, he develops a strong connection to the Willoud household, the focus of this story. Please go here (https://www.furaffinity.net/view/54716807/) and here (https://www.furaffinity.net/view/56298068/) for more on this bond.
After Jay graduates from college, he shocks everyone with his decision not to pursue grad school right away. He wants to see the world first while earning a living for himself. Following in the footsteps of many Westfolkmen before him, Jay signs on to Faerstow’s merchant fleet. He cannot believe his luck when he is accepted as a steward on perhaps the largest and proudest vessel of that time – the Lucinda Gail. Known affectionately as the “Lucy G.” and “Westfolk’s Champion” the bulk freighter specialized in carrying large shipments of iron ore, coal, or grain to port cities all over the world. Many are men with whom Jay grew up with in Westfolk and the green wolf reforges many close friendships among them during his time on board.
During Jay’s second season as a merchant mariner, the Lucinda Gail’s owners, Prentice Shipping, become involved in a lucrative contract with a prominent Teronian committee tasked with acquiring raw materials most essential to the country’s infrastructure. The committee would handsomely pay Prentice Shipping in return for the committee requisitioning a handful of vessels, including the Lucinda Gail to transport iron ore exclusively to Terona.
Jay is briefly reunited with the infamous Steen of Willoud (https://www.furaffinity.net/view/49794870/) and his aya, Terence Willoud (https://www.furaffinity.net/view/51522081/), as they along with several high-ranking society figures, are invited on board for a demonstration voyage. The trip is a success, and the contract is immediately put into effect. For the next two seasons, the Lucinda Gail sails back and forth between Faerstow and Terona, both she and her crew demonstrating their effectiveness in support of the latter country’s needs.
But despite these accomplishments, appearances were deceiving. By the time the Lucinda Gail given this task, she was very much past her prime. Years of being pushed to her limits had taken their toll and her steel plating was showing signs of weakness. Calls had been made for her to undergo an overhauling but Prentice Shipping’s parent company, the Bay Ironworks Corporation, pushed it back as it would have interfered with her increasingly busy schedule. As Jay’s third season ended, the Lucinda Gail was finally slated to have her hull strengthened during the winter layup… but not before Bay Ironworks completely tore the rug out from under her crew. Notwithstanding it being a successful season, she had fallen short of tonnage quotes established by her owners. She owed the company one last run.
The weather as she sailed toward Terona was expected to be choppy but not unlike other storms, known in Westfolk as ‘Autumn Serpents,’ the crew had faced before. In the middle of the night however, Jay heard a loud banging noise vibrating through the ship as the emergency alarm blared. To his, and his friends’ horror, the Lucinda Gail’s hull had given out as the waves ripped their ship into two pieces. Within minutes, she would be lying on the floor of the Bay, having thrown Jay and the others into its icy, merciless waters.
Only three men out of a crew of thirty-seven survived. Jay himself endured forty hours adrift in an open raft before he was found washed up on shore with the bodies of two of his crewmates. Westfolk would be hit hardest by the disaster with over 2/3 of the crew hailing from there. Overnight, the community was plunged into mourning.
As for Jay, his life was permanently altered by his ordeal. Severe frostbite resulted in the amputation of two of his right fingers. In public, he wears a prosthetic which he conceals under a dark glove. Members of the community look at him bitterly, resenting his survival when their loved ones were never coming home. By day, he endures neighbors' stares and whispering behind his back. As darkness falls, he struggles from nightmares as he relived the ordeal in his min, bringing us to this pic.
It is early morning as he holds his lifejacket as a relic from that awful night. He's been awake for hours after experiencing another nightmare. Everywhere he goes in Westfolk is a reminder of people he'll never see again.
He is surrounded by people who can’t help but see him as a reminder of why their husbands, fathers, sons, and brothers are dead, and consequently want little to do with him. He refuses to burden people who still care for him with his issues, fearing they’ll never look at him the same way if they knew the whole truth. All Jay is left with now are the memories of the friends he'd lost, the guilt he carries every day for breathing when they aren't, and that same painful question – Why am I still here?
Wow, that was ridiculously long! I promise my next submission will be less wordy heh.
The title 'I Remember the Fallen' is taken from the Longest Johns song 'Bones in the Ocean,' a truly beautiful and heartbreaking song on survivor's guilt which I highly recommend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qy_B6-seDqY
The circumstances of the Lucinda Gail sinking are inspired by two Great Lakes disasters - the loss of the Carl D. Bradley in 1958 and the Daniel J. Morrell in 1966.

As the souls of the dead live for'er in my mind
As I live all the years that they left me behind
I'll stay on the shore but still gaze at the sea
I remember the fallen and they think of me
For our souls in the ocean together will be
I remember the fallen and they think of me
For our souls in the ocean together will be
As I live all the years that they left me behind
I'll stay on the shore but still gaze at the sea
