So for the month of July, I decided to attempt one of those "draw every day" type challenges with a randomized list of prompts to follow.
This being a new thing for me, I refused to use anybody else's challenge ("Smaugust", etc) and came up with one of my own. As shown by the "rules", this involved a fixed prompt for each day, but with my pick of a secondary prompt for that day.
Did I make it? Was it fun? Yes, and yes. Some days were clearly better than others; you might even be able to tell a little.
The results, in order:
- "Housecat" + "shark". This came out ... not "bad", but not "good" either. You might even call it prophetic. But the important part is -- it at least got done!
- "Beaked/avian" + "iguana". I actually missed this day and made up for it later, but the result was worth it.
- "Shark" + "beetle". A deliberately unusual combination which I ... failed to really make work. Definitely one of the "lows" in the challenge.
- "Fins/frills" + "deer". Regrets were had -- not for the attempt, just the results. Next!
- "Beaver" + "crab". A rather forgettable result, but at least an improvement over day 4.
- "Rodent" + "avian". I got tired of just sketching reference poses and went for something more dynamic to mix things up. It is sorely missing a sense of (small) scale, but the drawing itself proceeded very quickly!
- "Beetle" + "raptor". It's creepy. It's alien. And that's why I JUST LOVE IT.
- "Raptor" + "wolf". A seemingly straightforward concept that ... didn't turn out straightforward at all.
- "Deer" + "mustelid". The idea here was an aquatic adaptation with a body more like an otter for better swimming, but ... nope, clearly a swing and a miss here.
- "Dragon" + "songbird". But aside from the forked swallowtail, you really can't tell. Could I have done better? Yes. Did I worry about not doing better? No.
- "Metal" + "mantis". Not the Secret of Mana boss nor the Pokemon Scyther/Scizor, I consider this the worst of the lot, but there is no time for regrets, you learn to take the bad days along with the good.
- "Crab" + "snail". A useful combination in concept, but I don't have much to say otherwise.
- "Leopard" + "wing-arms". With a dynamic action pose! Despite having to draw all the spots. One of my best days.
- "Mantis" + "tool-using". Not exactly an improvement over day 11, but I ran with the idea of showing them using sickles and scythes for harvesting grain, to feed grub-like livestock.
- "Tiger" + "dolphin". Arguably a bit close to day 1's cat-shark in concept, but in execution I feel it was much improved.
- "Horse" + "scavenger". And I thought "mantis" was my worst prompt ... then this happened.
- "Dolphin" + "ant". ...then, not to be outdone, THIS happened.
- "Tool-using" + "beaver". I mean, of course. Why not show them using some modern techniques to fell trees larger than usual?
- "Furred" + "Sauropod". So you get a "woolly triceratops" adapted for cold climates.
- "Songbird" + "-taur". Taurs are ... just weird. There's obviously an implied story here, but I refuse to dive into it.
- "Scavenger" + "rodent". More improved from my other attempt at "scavenger", this family lives under the protection of an old cat's skull and is currently dicing up some sort of snake for food.
- "Wolf" + "dragon". An oddly forgettable result for combining two well-known sources.
- "Snail" + "housecat". This combination turned out ... "fine", I guess? No love lost here.
- "Sauropod" + "leopard". Drawing a bit from ankylosaurus, the "spots" are actually clusters of hardened spines.
- "Wing-arms" + "fox". A combination I reserved in advance (because I could), I didn't want to just duplicate the wing-armed-leopard from earlier, but what came out is still one of my overall favorites for the month.
- "Ant" + "tiger". Another simple, but weird-in-an-alien-sort-of-way combination. I don't hate it.
- "Crow" + "furred". Meaning no feathers allowed, so it gets more leathery, almost bat-like wings instead.
- "Mustelid" + "metal". By "metal" I originally meant along the lines of robotic or cybernetic, but this cute weasel thing came out looking more like it belongs under "tool use". Were mistakes made? Yeah. Were regrets had? No.
- "-Taur" + "fins/frills". So you get this weird swamp-swimmer (think Gastrodon but as a -taur) whose body provides shade that some fish follow. Fish which are sometimes grabbed for food.
- "Iguana" + "horse". Which came out looking more like a "we have Great Jagras at home", but this was the penultimate drawing for the month and there is no time to be disappointed!
- "Fox" + "corvid". The final combination I also reserved in advance, and I wanted something special for a final send-off. So you get the goofy pose. That goofy pose.
