Continuing in my efforts using the new methods of lighting/shading. I wish I could take a proper class...
Now I'm 100% sure there's a bug in GIMP 2.8.20 that causes it to crash while attempting to scale an image with special layers. I've tried it on 2 separate images now and it crashes every time. So I gotta copy the whole image over (as 1 layer) to a new canvas then scale that. Just a minor inconvenience.

I haven't seen a motor vehicle accident when it comes to power poles. But I did see one years ago as I was waiting around to swap school buses on my way home from school. What I remembered hearing was that the guy's brakes failed as he was coming up on an intersection, and rammed into a dumpster. Heard this from my assistant PE teacher as he was the one who saw it happen as well when he was on his way home. It was quite the surreal experience. Fortunately the guy was all right.
I've had brakes fail when coming to a stop but never totally fail and I could stop it just took some quick thinking and extra force. Cars (post 1967) have split brake systems to make it highly unlikely to have a total brake failure. Sometimes in stories like that I find it more believable that either 1. The car already had a half inoperative brake system that should've been repaired long ago. or 2. They mistaked the pedals and didn't realize it until it was too late.
