Chomby stared at the screen. His hands shook as he held the controller. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to cry or throw the controller in frustration.
“I literally dodged that, Sarge! I spent ten whole minutes on that fight and he killed me with the stupid ‘Haha, let’s do a fake trustfall move’ that my character got magnet-grabbed into! I dodgerolled at the exact best time!” Chomby huffed and dropped the controller to the couch. He closed his eyes.
“I usually ran with a hit-and-run build for this boss. Did you equip the Tabletosser? It only costs one skill point and is surprisingly helpful here. Makes all your movement abilities move you around 10% further.”
Chomby opened his eyes and sighed. He looked back at the screen. His character was currently laying on the ground with a big “CONTINUE?” sitting above him in a cold-colored, slab-serif font. The single word cut deep.
“I did, yeah….” Chomby felt his heart sink. He lowered his head and looked down at his lap. “Should I continue?”
“Maybe you could take a break? You’re getting worked up. Why don’t we go listen to Requiem of Danger again? You’d been really enjoying that album.”
“I mean… should I continue making music… and trying to actually be a real person?” Chomby gritted his teeth. “I feel I’d be better off just fully accepting I’m a jacket and leaning into it.”
Sarge spoke thoughtfully. “The continue screen made you feel this way? Or did it just bring up something from your past?”
“A bit of both.”
“Well, the screen poses a good question. Do you want to continue? Do you want to keep fighting toward your goal so you can win?”
“But I’ve been banging my head against this wall for so long! It’s stagnating.”
“Then do something else for a bit,” Sarge suggested. “There are more things you can do outside of your main objective. You can get stronger, you can learn new skills, you can even work on relationships with other people to increase your friendship score.”
“Are you talking about the game or about my life?”
“You decide.”
Chomby looked down at his lap. For the past few months, he’d been putting his heart and soul into his songs. Recently, they’ve been getting very little traction.
If he was putting a lot of effort into these songs, and got very little from it, then doing the songs felt like more of a chore than something he enjoyed.
But then that question remained. Continue?
Was it worth continuing? If he felt so exhausted that he wanted to stop, then wouldn’t it be best to give up?
Chomby’s mind dug back to the time he died. At that point, he chose to give up his own life for someone else’s… but he somehow came back anyway. He still had no idea why, but he knew at the time that continuing was worth it. But why?
Sarge. Sarge was the reason he continued before. He chose to continue because Sarge needed him. Sarge was hurting, and only Chomby could comfort him.
“I need a reason to continue, though.” Chomby finally said after several minutes. “What am I fighting for?”
“Depends on what we’re talking about. If it’s the game, then it’s the story and accomplishments of winning. If we’re talking about you, then that’s something you need to find out… but a good place to start is experiencing the world. Learn to love and experience the world around you.”
Chomby sighed. “I guess that’s a start, yeah.” He scratched an ear. “When I came back before, I came back because of you.”
“Still don’t know why that was, but I’m happy you came back….” Sarge said. “Were you not happy to be back?”
“I was happy to see you smile again. Your joy of having me back gave me the strength to continue.”
“I don’t suppose my enjoying you being my friend would work again, though?”
“Not sure, but I don’t think I’m against it.” Chomby said gruffly. He picked up the controller and flicked between the “yes” and “no” buttons. “I just can’t decide. Do I continue? Do I not? Do I just stop trying?”
“You already know what I think, Chomby, but you know I can’t decide for you. You’ll have to figure it out on your own.”
Chomby stared at the screen for another minute. He then took a deep breath, flicked his finger to his choice, and pressed the button.

Here's the next song on the docket -- Last Continue! From what I understand, it's a song about someone who dealt with a bad relationship and is questioning if they want to try to find a relationship again, because it was so hard before. I personally feel the ideology of this song can be further expanded. We have multiple times in our life where we see that continue screen and we question if it's worth it to keep going.
I cannot speak for anyone but myself when I say what should be done at that point, as it's all up to us to decide. But if it's something worth fighting for, or something that makes me happy, (and it doesn't harm anyone), then I'd say to keep going.
So, keep going everyone. You've got this!
