They needed similar powers, but can't be negated with the usual things, like Anti-Magic Shell or Dispel Magic, etc.

Yup, I think it was primarily to make mind-flayers, aka "magicians who can't be negated by anti-magic," and it just got out of hand from there.

wow that's actually pretty clever, the idea of using low-tier baby magic meant for whimsy and lacking any sort of punch BUT it's easy to learn, then turning around and applying said magic to some kind of deadly modern payload to make up for the lack of punchy-ness. What The Mink is doing isn't magic in the traditional sense, she may just be a very powerful psionicist. Not only is she making use of her own mental discipline and energies, but she can't literally make something from nothing as is often the case with "true magic" systems, and she's proven on more than one occasion she's an energy vampire.

Everything she does is about changing states of matter and energy, and even follows to an extent the laws of thermodynamics. Her powers aren't infinite, she's not truly immortal, she's limited by how skilled she is.

It's also clear she had no mentor, like the old magicians did, which is why in a straight up fight, Berecki would've totally owned her, if it hadn't been for Savage Squirrel's aid and even then they almost lost to him.

Like any craft or skill. You can be very good at it, scary good at it, or you can royally suck at them..

Oh that's easy, a TK -or any other psionic type is usually dependant on themselves as the power source, while Magik types get theirs by channeling ambient mana or mana stored in artifacts.
The hazy part are theoretical places charged with spirit energy a psi can supposedly accidentally turn on by being there or accidentally tapping (causing ghosts and poltergeists)
The darkest theory about psi-latents are that Spontaneous Combustion cases are Pyrokenetics finding out too late they have that power...
