Nature can be a fickle mistress. In elder days, the material plane was brought to a new state of diversity by the elemental conjunction. Each of the elemental planes colliding with one another wreaked chaos upon the material plane, throwing many of their residents astray into an unknown environment unfit for their needs and hostile to them.

A flame unchecked can quickly grow into a wildfire and so it was that the circle of the herding flame was born, uniting druids of all caliber to seek out these outcasts and immigrants to eventually form a bond with them.

They were to protect the spirits, nuture their power and preserve them from the eyes of those who would seek to exploit their destructive potency, using the energy of the flames to bring warmth and kindle life anew within their woods. But binding with an ember is neither easy nor sage, nonetheless each flamekeeper protects them with their life as few could be trusted with fire at their fingertips.
