Well, here we get to the end of the story. Or rather, the end of the part. But I still have something to say to you guys. Honestly, I wanted to write a review yesterday, but it just so happened that I only saw the pages now.
What can I say overall about this comic? It's not bad, really. I enjoyed following each new page, and I really liked the characters. Yes, there were some controversial moments, and the author himself told us about them, but for me personally they did not spoil the picture. On the contrary, Vallju created bright and ambiguous characters who do both positive and negative things. The main character, Gervic, took a special place in my heart, I won't hide it. He is very well developed, his developmental arc was one of the hardest for me to get through. Our favourite wolf goes through a very long and difficult journey, and even though I don't approve of Gerv's murder of Bob, I can understand why he did it. I liked the rest of the cast characters a lot too, and I hope we get to see more of their adventures, such as Gharn's story in our time, when he got to live in the 21st century.
The setting of the piece hit me too, striking me with the way the castles look, the costumes of the characters. Though how they all wear boots remains a mystery to me, especially in regards to Jokann, who is a bird. I can see that the author researched the material very well before sitting down to script a huge canvas called Captive. And in that, I see big pluses.
Another plus for Vallju is the way he shows us how the characters feel, and he does it with visual effects. Particularly powerful for me are the moments when Gervic learns of the death of the girl he loves and when he worries about Vlagg being injured. In the former the dragon's speech disappears and the wolf walks to the tower surrounded by broken lines, in the latter he and everything becomes black and white and only the outfit Vlagg has staged for him and the potion given to Gerv by Aravinn remain in colour. I was ready for a standing ovation looking at that. It's a really strong gimmick.
If I were a critic, I would give it a rating of 9.5, because of the novel's controversial moments. But even so, I still love this work and am looking forward to the epilogue very much.
