Fun fact, the written word at one point was meant to be read aloud, so there was very little to no punctuation. Understanding was usually for the listener, not the reader. Imagine if your monk pal is playing the role of the "audio device" and suddenly your pal starts reading complete jibberish due to a mistake. Moral of the story, punctuation is your friend and so is the printing press. Though the artistry that went into original paw drawn manuscripts is admirable to the extreme.
