“What’s this zipper doing here?” Kate asked while strolling down the pathway. In the glimpse of her eye, a clean silver zipper glimmered under the sun rays. She was sure it wasn’t there before, but there was no way it just popped out of thin air right?
She squatted down, picking this odd trinket. Her curiosity compelled her to inspect it fully, feeling an unusual sense of intrigue towards it. Kate stood up, tapping on it to feel its cool exterior. Cool under this sweltering weather? She brushed against her crimson hair. Seriously, what was this thing?
Onlookers gave her strange looks for stopping mid-way, causing her to blush. She quickly tucked the zipper within her pockets before heading down to her friend’s house. It was the usual hang out spot for them just to relax and vent about life.
As she turned around the corner, her mind kept popping up questions about the zipper. If it's a zipper, shouldn’t it be attached to a zip? So where was the zip in the first place? And who dropped this zipper cause she was sure it wasn’t there just now. Someone had to drop it there right?
Overcomed by her curiosity, she took out the zipper within her hand once more to inspect it closer. Under the blazing sun, its silver exterior truly was beautiful to witness. Did she really just pick up a silver zipper? Was this really silver? And if it was, how much could she sell it for? $100? $200?
But as she wandered, Kate tripped onto a rock, causing her to stumble and fall onto her knees. She squealed in shock, closing her eyes to brace for the pain to come. But it never did. Instead from her limbs there was a numbing feeling to it like someone had injected her with anesthesia into them.
The zipper from her hands landed onto her chest, fully attached to it. Cutting through the middle, a line formed. No, not a line. A zip to be more exact. With its jagged edges, it waited to be unzipped.
Kate looked at her new found zipper in a mixture of shock and panic. What was going on? Since when did she have a zip? And how did this zipper get attached to it? Bystanders gave concerned glances at her. Yet none tried to help her out as they went along with their lives.
As air entered through the zipper, she forced herself to stand up, trying desperately to regain her balance. Her legs felt flimsy like paper. To her, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration ifa strong gust of wind blew her away. She leaned against a brick wall, trying to rationalize what had just happened to her.
Kate looked down at her zipper that radiated a dark aura around it. Now that it was attached to her, she was certain that the zipper was cursed in some shape or form. Even standing up was a struggle for her with her body weakened by the second. She felt as though something within her was sucking up all of her energy.
Regardless, she thought it was going to be a minor inconvenience, something like a flu of sorts. She tried to inch her way to her friend’s house, with her hand by the wall. She panted as if she had just sprinted and was now catching her breath. Alright, this was getting ridiculous.
Kate managed to get into an alleyway with no one looking. She muttered under her breath, “Time to get rid of you!”
She tried to pull the zipper off her chest, but a sharp pain pulsated through her body causing her to let go, falling onto the floor. She coughed violently. But her resolve didn’t falter. She tried to pull once more, but this time towards the ground.
Kate stopped midway as her hands went limp. Not just her hands, but her body and chest as well, as the zipper unzipped her entire top half. Her human body had been splitted from the middle, revealing a brown horse’s torso. It felt as if her body had been torn into half without the pain involved with it.
Her mane was the color of chestnut. Her mouth was now extended with her teeth and nose were way ahead of her, almost as if she was being stretched out forcefully. The smells of the alleyway assaulted her with her new wide nose, making her sick.
Her eyes widened as she tried to shout for help but only a loud “Neigh!” came out of her mouth. Her once dexterous hands were now clumsy hooves that couldn’t even balance herself. Her smooth skin that she prided herself on was now thick brown fur that covered her entire body.
Her ears were now at the top of her head, as they twitched at the footsteps that walked past her. Struggling to balance, she fell onto the floor, causing the rest of her body to unzip as well. Her rest of her body ballooned in comparison to her regular human body, being much longer and larger.
As the body was revealed, she felt a jolt behind her back. Like something had grown behind her and was moving. She looked back to see a thick brown tail, swaying rhythmically left and right. Meanwhile, her legs were now firm and muscular to support the weight of her entire body.
The zipper on the other hand, dropped onto the ground, lying there beside what remained of her human skin. Although the change was virtually painless, it was uncomfortable akin to a tooth extraction after anesthesia had been administered. Her new body wasn’t any more comfortable, feeling more bloated and clunky compared to her sleek self.
Kate, who had finally finished changing into a horse, was now shivering with her legs. Confusion and fear were stuck in her mind as she tried to figure out what was going on.
What had just happened to her? But how did this happen in the first place? What should she do now? Run away? But where? Could she tell her friends? But her phone was way smaller than her hooves? No, there was no way she’s a horse right? This just had to be a nightmare. A very vivid nightmare. Right?
“Look Mummy! I told you there’s a horse here!” A young girl exclaimed, pointing at her. The mother covered her mouth, before pulling out her phone to record Kate in a video. Kate’s tail froze mid air as this shattered her only possibility that this wasn’t real.
She tried to walk away with her legs but as she raised one of her hooves, the other three wobbled, almost at the brink of falling down. This scared her, causing her fur to stand up like she had goosebumps. What if she fell down here? What then? As a result, she stood there still, hoping for no one else to come.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.
Other people soon began to flock around the alleyway as she shivered in fear. They took photos, sending it to social media about how a wild horse had escaped the farm. No, don’t look at her. Don’t take pictures of this big body of hers. Her eyes watered up, as she helplessly stood there. With all those eyes around her and the number of gossip being spread around, her heart pounded in fear.
She had to run. Run away from here. Maybe, if she reached her friend’s house, she would be able to hide there for the time being. Maybe, she could return to her apartment as well, staying low for the time being. Anywhere but here.
With fear in her eyes, she walked away. Her legs trembled while she took her first step forward before tripping and falling onto her knees for the second step. She whimpered in response, blaming herself for even touching that cursed object in the first place.
Eventually, men in lab coats soon arrived, pushing through the crowd. Were they going to help her? They wore protective equipment as if they were approaching radioactive material. One of them gingerly placed the zipper into a ziplock bag, tightening it up to prevent any air from escaping. Another one of them took off his head suit, revealed his messy curly hair and inspected her wallet that laid within her skin.
“Kate Smith? Is that your name?” He asked.
She neighed in response.
Patting her head, he looked at her with pity, “So Kate. I’ll assume that you saw this zipper magically appear, grab it and somehow got it attached to your chest. Then as you tried to remove it from your body, you somehow unzipped yourself to become this horse. Yes?”
She nodded her head, enthusiastically. Finally someone who has an idea about what was going on. Maybe he could help her get back to her original body.
“Oh right, where are my manners?” He flashed her his business card, “Name is James Green or Dr Green. I’m from the government, investigating these supernatural objects. You, my good miss, have just encountered one of them.”
His voice softened, “We call the zipper as the animal zipper where it would unzip humans into various animals. In this month alone, your case was the fifth. You are one of the lucky ones, becoming a horse. The previous one changed into a worm so count your blessings.”
Her eyes blinked excitedly while she tried to stand back up. If their organization knew this much about this damn zipper, surely they also know the cure to it.
Dr Green sighed. His mouth went dry but it didn’t matter. He had a job to do. He continued, “Miss Smith, I am sorry to say this but there’s no changing back. It is simply impossible since your human skin has already been splitted into half.”
Once again her hopes had shattered into bits and pieces. So now what? How was she going to live now as a horse? She looked down onto the floor, crestfallen at this development.
“I apologize for my colleague’s actions but,” One of Dr Green colleagues collared her. She neighed as loudly as she could, slamming her hooves onto the ground angrily. Was she going to be locked away in some lab? “We have already sold you off to a nearby farm for public safety reasons. I hope you can understand.”
Her limbs went weak. Sold off like some animal? How could they? She was a real woman that had a life before this! Seeing this opportunity, the colleague tried to tug her into their van. She shed tears, whimpering to hopefully stop this.
Once she got locked into the van, she collapsed once again onto her knees. On the bumpy ride to her new farm, she could only blame herself for her curiosity. Why did she have to touch it? Why did she have to even look at it? She could have easily ignored it.
And now what about her friends? Her family? Was she never going to see them again? What would they even think of her now? Just because she couldn’t control herself, she had to lose them all.
As she arrived at the farm, the fresh air tried to cheer her up. But with the knowledge of her fate being sealed here only made her despair. She was greeted by the farm owner where she was then released into the vast greenland.
Once released, Kate strolled across it where the smell of grass instinctively made her eat patches of them on the ground. She was embarrassed at how delicious grass was to her now but that quickly faded.
Since then, she lived her life on the farm as a horse. The only silver lining for her was that it was a carefree life. All she does is eat, gallop around the field and sleep. Occasionally, she would give rides to visitors of the farm. Yet everyday she misses her regular human life, cursing herself for this situation.
Meanwhile, the animal zipper had teleported away from its containment, searching for its next victim.
