I like the basic idea that the lightning forms a "cage" for the blood magic, and directs it the way electricity finds the path of least resistance. Which means, if YOU are the path of least resistance, you get hit with an undodgable double whammy. Blood has a VERY high concentration of things that can conduct electricity, so it would be a natural attractor of lightning to begin with!
