The Neko sat on an empty park bench, checking his phone one last time, wincing at the words that were shown to him before shutting off the device, stuffing it in his pockets and closing his eyes, feeling the soft wind blow through his thick fur. He felt…lost, like he’d been following a set of directions, and yet somehow arrived at the wrong place. He fidgeted with his tail a bit, his ears flicking at thoughts as they rushed by, his anxiety quite visually apparent, for no one to see. Finally, he took a moment to breathe, and, with the appearance of his friend sitting next to him, began to speak.
“…I don’t…understand what I’m doing wrong. I try to help people, and comfort them, and do what they want, and yet…I still can’t help everyone. Why is that, do you think? That no matter what I do, it’s impossible to help every time without fail?”
He rested his head on his friend’s lap, their voice soft and gentle as they responded.
“Well…I suppose it’s impossible to fulfill everyone’s needs. You’re just one person, after all. The needs of each person are all different, whether in big or small ways, and your key will not open every lock holding them back from happiness.”
The Neko mulled over his friend’s words for a few moments, continuing to fidget as his mind bounced from worry to worry, before finding the path to continue.
“Well…why do I seem to make people feel bad, then? Even when I try to help?”
The friend tilted their head, softly stroking his head as they spoke.
“Because you miss things sometimes, too. It’s bound to happen with so many people- though, that’s not to say that it isn’t at least partially your fault, eheh. And…you just, can’t fill the needs of everyone while filling your own needs too. So, don’t worry about it, alright? Just take care of yourself, take care of those around you as much as you can, and things will turn out alright in the end.”
He smiled a bit at their words, letting out a quiet sigh as he sat up, stretching out and getting off the bench, closing his eyes once more.
“Thank you, Chroma. You always help me make sense of things.”
“Anytime, silly. You know I’m never far.”
The Neko nodded, the empty park peaceful and still as he plodded back home, his mind a little more clear.
